A recent social media controversy involving Day6's Dowoon has sparked a heated debate among fans and netizens. On December 8, 2024, a post by an X user, @dowoonout, accused the musician of being insensitive for sharing a video in which he practiced drums while wearing military-style pants.
The post came during heightened political unrest in South Korea, where protests against President Yoon Suk-yeol continued following his briefly declared martial law. The Instagram reel shared by the DAY6 member has been removed at the time of this article's publication.
The user’s statement, framed as a collective opinion of Day6 fans, demanded Dowoon’s withdrawal from the group. The statement alleges that his attire in the video disrespected the country's current political climate.
"Dowoon's video featuring him wearing a military uniform deals with a highly sensitive topic in the current climate, reflecting a lack of responsibility as a public figure. Recording content while wearing a military uniform in the current situation can be seen as an act that betrays the trust of fans and the public," the statement read.
Among their demands were a formal statement from JYP Entertainment, the artist's removal from the group, and improved internal management to prevent future controversies.
Despite the statement’s grand claims, it gained minimal traction, garnering only a handful of likes. Many fans dismissed it as an exaggerated response from an individual rather than a genuine representation of the fandom. An X user, @Jenneey_ni, wrote,
"Knets level of stupidity is another level."
Others, too, argued that the military pants might have been a casual choice unrelated to the political situation. They came forward to defend the Day6 member, emphasizing his professionalism and intent as an artist. Many argue that isolating an individual’s actions without full context harms the group more than it helps.
"Better go out and join the protest or smtg instead of spreading such a bs on the internet. What on earth are you smoking when dowoon just mind his business with his drum, and you have an audacity to connect those harmless things with the martial law that your president announced?," a fan remarked.
"No. I am Myday, and I did not agree with this," another X user wrote.
"Imagine calling yourself a fan and this is what you do! At this rate there will be no Day6 left," another user mentioned.
"But honestly, I don't understand why k acts fans are obsessed with asking for the withdrawal of members, if you don't agree with their political ideas, stop supporting them and that's it," a netizen commented.
Many fans pointed out that the statement reflected the opinion of a single user and did not represent the broader fanbase.
"Which fans did you represent in these sentences? Yourself?," an X user commented.
"1 account doesn't represent the entire fandom," a fan wrote on X.
"this… is so dumb," a netizen remarked.
More about DAY6's Dowoon and the ongoing protests in South Korea
Dowoon is a singer and drummer from the South Korean band DAY6 under JYP Entertainment. He debuted as a solo artist in September 2021 with his single Out of the Blue. Notably, he was not part of DAY6’s original lineup, which was initially known as 5LIVE. In 2015, Dowoon joined the group, prompting a rebranding to the name DAY6.
The band debuted on September 7, 2015, with members Jae, Junhyeok, Sungjin, Young K, Wonpil, and Dowoon. Junhyeok and Jae later left the group for personal reasons in 2016 and 2021, respectively.
Meanwhile, South Korea remains tense as thousands demand President Yoon's resignation over alleged authoritarian actions. Many celebrities have publicly supported the protests, sharing symbolic gestures such as candlelit photos or statements.
While the post stirred brief controversy, the overwhelming majority of fans voiced their support for the idol, urging unity within the fandom and dismissing the calls for drastic action. Neither Dowoon nor JYP Entertainment has addressed the matter.
