On November 28, 2024, BTS' Suga made headlines for moving out of his Parc Hannam apartment in Seoul. He had purchased the luxurious penthouse on lease for 9.5 billion won (about $7.1 million). However, the apartment deposit was reportedly made via BIGHIT MUSIC.
According to Biz Hankook, Choi Jin-min, founder of Kiturami Group and chairman of Cricket Group, is purchasing the property for 17 billion won ($12.1 million). Choi has requested a provisional ownership transfer from the court before completing the payment.
Suga reportedly resided at Parc Hannam till May 2023 before moving out to his current home in Nine One Hannam, Gangnam, Seoul. It is crucial to note that it is not yet confirmed if BIGHIT MUSIC paid just a part of the deposit for his Parc Hannam villa. Nonetheless, the property is legally owned via a lease agreement by the BTS idol.
As per Investopedia, rich people often use their company name or trust name to register their property in public documents. However, the real estate's complete ownership resides with the individual itself and the company owns nothing. Affluent people also do it to protect their assets from being seized in the future under unforeseen circumstances.
Therefore, although BIGHIT MUSIC paid the deposit for Suga's Parc Hannam residence, the property is officially owned by the BTS idol. The company has no ownership of the artist's assets whatsoever.
Additionally, the report also mentioned that in 2018, the rapper-songwriter previously purchased a 3.4 billion won (approximately $2.43 million) property in Hannam Riverhill in UN Village, Seoul. The Grammy-nominated artist moved out of the property in 2021 due to alleged conflicts with other residents.
The news went viral on the Korean online forum, TheQoo. Some netizens lashed out at the BTS idol for living off of his company's property, misunderstanding the legality of the property ownership. Hence, the BTS fanbase came to defend the artist. One fan wrote on X:
"Leave him alone!"
Fans mentioned that it was BTS' Min Yoongi's personal matter which needn't be made public by media outlets.
""financed by big hit" that's stupid, remember they have several houses and always pay me up to 5 and 10M dollars in cash , Yoongi doesn't need anyone's money," one fan wrote.
"This doesn’t need to be public information," another fan said.
"Mind your business buddyy!! Leave him alone," another fan added.
Others underscored that Yoongi is "a rich man" and can buy any number of villas.
"No one needs to fund him if he needs to move out. He's a rich man himself. And even if he moves out of his place, that's completely his personal matter. We don't have to know that." one fan remarked.
"He can buy the whole country," another fan emphasized.
"Leave yoongi alone! and He can pay his own fvckng villa. so stop meddling with his life." one other fan said.
BTS' Suga falsely accused and defamed by JTBC during his DUI incident
On August 7, 2024, the artist was charged with drunk driving an electric scooter/kickboard on his way home to his residence in Nine One Hannam, when he tripped in front of his house. The Korea Times reported that as per police reports, the K-pop idol's blood alcohol content was over 0.227%.
The Korean news outlet, JTBC, released a fake CCTV clip, claiming that Suga was drunk driving a regular scooter at high speed. The video was blurred and altered. The BTS idol faced severe public backlash following this until another news outlet, Dong-A Ilbo, released the real CCTV footage on August 15.
The original clip showed the K-pop idol riding an electric seated kickboard with a helmet on the pavement near his house, slower than 25 km/hr (the speed of a bicycle). The video highlighted people walking past him. He took a slow turn to enter his residence when he tripped. However, he got up immediately and dusted off his clothes, picking up his helmet.
BTS fans protested online by trending hashtags and tagging JTBC to apologize to Suga for allegedly misreporting his case and defaming him. On August 16, JTBC issued an apology on national TV for creating confusion among the public with their unverified report.
On September 11, 2024, Korea JoongAng Daily reported that Suga's DUI case was closed after the court fined him between 10 million won and 20 million won (approximately $14,328.81).
