JTBC's The Tale of Lady Ok is already making waves, leaving viewers asking for more. With only two episodes left, the series is drawing to an end. JTBC has announced a special commentary episode, which will air on February 1, 2025. The special episode will include behind-the-scenes action and stories from the series cast.
The special episode will allow the cast and crew to repay viewers for the love and appreciation they have shown for the series.
The series is full of notable names such as director Jin Hyuk, who is credited with making classics such as Master's Sun, City Hunter, and The Legend of Blue Sea. Jin Hyuk is known for his gripping storytelling and strong women characters, and The Tale of Lady Ok is not any different.
Lim Ji-yeon, who previously garnered praise for her role as Park Yeon-Jin in The Glory, is back in the titular role of Lady Ok in The Tale of Lady Ok.
The series presents the story of a young female slave, Goo-deok or Lady Ok, who dares to break the shackles and manages to rise against all the odds. She is a legal expert, intelligent, athletic, spirited, and would not shy away from helping others at all costs.
Lady Ok crosses paths with a storyteller named Cheon Seung-hwi, who travels all across the country. Seung-hwi falls in love with Ok Tae-young, who is faking not only her status and her husband but also her identity. Seung-hwi eventually figures out her true identity but stays by her side, supporting her with all his might.
The Tale of Lady Ok focuses on themes of class divide & patriarchy and is said to be based on the classic novel Legend of Yoo-Yeon
The series highlights the prevalent class divide between slaves and nobles during the Joseon period. The slaves led a life where they had no rights and nobles could get away with even the most heinous crimes.
The show also shows the conditions of women and the prevalent patriarchy in society. Women could not decide their fate or future on their own, and in such a setting, Goo-deok or Ok Tae-young is a warrior who believes in carving her niche.
The Tale of Lady Ok is said to be inspired by the classic novel Legend of Yoo Yeon written by Lee Honbok. The writer for the series, Park Ji-sook, was influenced by the novel, whose story revolved around Yoo-Yeon when he was falsely accused of murder and subsequently executed.
After his execution, his wife struggles to uncover the truth in society with a deep-rooted class divide. Park Ji-sook stresses that the absence of a real-life strong female figure during Joseon times led her to create a fictional female character.
