Starring actors Jung Hae-in, Jung So-min, and Kim Ji-eun, Love Next Door aired its third episode on August 25 on Netflix. The series follows the story of Hae-in's Chae Seung-hyo and So-min's Bae Seok-ryu, who spent most of their lives together as their mothers were best friends. Love sparked between them as they reunited after several years in their 30s.

Episode 3 of Love Next Door unveiled the letters Chae Seung-hyo, Bae Seok-ryu, and Jeong Mo-eum, played by actress Kim Ji-eun, put in the time capsule during their high school days. In the letter, Choi Seung-hyo held a secret about his feelings for his best friend, Bae Seok-ryu.

He revealed that he started swimming due to asthma, but Bae Seok-ryu became a driving force for him to improve at it as she feared water.

“I might've started swimming because of asthma but I think the reason why I want to be good at swimming was because of Seok Ryu. If Seok Ryu, who's afraid of water, ever falls into it, I could save her at any moment,” Choi Seung-hyo wrote, as translated by @sugaboo____ on X.
“Also the tournament that even my parents didn't come to, I realized it when I saw her who came to see me giving up her exam. After I met Bae Seok Ryu, there wasn't a moment when I didn't like her,” he added.

Choi Seung-hyo feared his feelings for Bae Seok-ryu would ruin their friendship. However, while writing to his future self, he hoped that maybe after ten years, he would confess his love for Bae Seok-ryu.

More about Jung Hae-in’s letter in Love Next Door

The recent episode of Love Next Door showcased Chae Seung-hyo’s letter to his future self. He found this idea very childish, yet he continued writing it as Bae Seok-ryu had asked him to.

“To Choi Seung Hyo 10 years later, the fact that I need to write a letter like this is really childish. I did this because Bae Seok Ryu asked me to, so I will just write whatever I can first,” he wrote.

Besides talking about his crush, Jung Hae-in’s character, Choi Seung-hyo, also discussed his dream and aspirations as a swimmer in the letter. He was confident he would make it to the Olympics; however, he wished his future self would not be discouraged if he didn't win a gold medal.

“Perhaps by that time you're already in olympic 3 times right? You could've gone worldwide a lot, you're now a really veteran swimmer. Since the olympic medal is a gift from heaven, I don't know if you got it or not but I hope you won't get disappointed with the result. It's enough if you enjoyed the process.”

Jung Hae-in's dreams crippled in Love Next Door

In 2007, Choi Seung-hyo won the gold medal at the Seoul National Swimming Championship. He made it to the national swimming team, which would have further led him to his dream to compete in the esteemed Olympics.

On the first day of national team practice, Choi Seung-hyo got into an accident while crossing the road. His leg was fractured, and he was informed that after rehabilitation, he would be able to walk. However, he could not continue swimming, which left him heartbroken.

Given that Choi Seung-hyo was a model student in high school, he decided to pursue a career in Architecture. After years of practicing in the field, he loves doing his job so much that even if he were given a chance to turn back time and return to swimming, he would not go back.

Love Next Door airs every week on Saturday and Sunday at 9.20 pm KST on tvN and Netflix.
