Mission Cross, released on Netflix on August 7, stars Yum Jung-ah, Hwang Jung-min, and Jeon Hye-jin. Directed by Lee Myung-hoon, this action-packed and funny film follows a retired special forces agent, Kang-mu, played by Hwang Jung-min, who is pulled back into action.
The movie is fun to watch and captures the attention of the viewer for the shorter-than-usual duration that it uses to convey the story. The movie stars Hwang Jung-min as the domesticated Kang-mu, whose calm life as a devoted house husband is upended after he is approached by a desperate former teammate.
Yum Jung-ah plays the no-nonsense wife Mi-seon, who leads Seoul's Major Crime Investigation Division. She finds out her modest husband is more complex than he appears. Jeon Hye-jin will be seen as Hee-ju in Mission Cross.
From Jung-min's character, Kang-mu being the ideal househusband to his firing guns and getting in bare fist fights alongside his wife, the movie makes sure the audience has a smile on their faces as they watch the two come together to take down the evil.
Mission Cross review: Hwang Jung-min and Yum Jung-ah bring back the teamwork for a fun and action-packed movie
Mission Cross revolves around the story of Kang-mu, a former agent who now lives a calm life as a househusband and keeps his past a secret from his wife. His wife, Mi-seon, is a seasoned investigator with the Major Crimes Division, renowned as the Hunter of Major Crimes for her skill.
While assisting a former colleague, Hee-ju, in her quest for her missing husband, Kang-mu is inadvertently lured back into the world of espionage. Mi-seon sees his acts as adultery, setting off a series of miscommunications and high-stakes adventures.
The movie plays it safe while keeping to what viewers have been known to like. It is a wholesome love story where two people stand by each other through thick and thin and add to that a sprinkle of crime investigation and action.
Viewers can enjoy the 1 hour 40 minutes without dealing with any complex storyline or intricate character design. However, a platter of comedy, suspense, and a bit of a twist is served to the audience, without weighing too heavily on any of the above.
Kang-mu, the former intelligence officer played by Hwang Jung-min has the story going as characters from his past emerge, forcing him into a situation where he has to take matters into his own hands and go back to his old ways. He gathers appreciation from the audience while also making them laugh with his antiques.
Mi-seon, the gritty and brave police officer played by Yum Jung-ah might initially fool the audience into thinking of her as a cold woman who barely cares about her husband but eventually, her love for him, which is straightforward and genuine becomes evident. She is not one to back down and matches up to Kang-mu as the two bring out their guns to catch a culprit.
The couple is not the typical romantic kind but one would find themselves rooting for them.
Apart from these characters, Mi-seon's team and Hee-ju, played by Jeon Hye-jin add more flavour to the movie. An unwavering support from her team helps Mi-seon put everything together for the couple to succeed. From following Kang-mu, doubting him of being involved in an affair to pretending to speak to an ex-wife, they go to the lengths to make Mi-seon know she is cared for and respected.
Not much about Hee-ju's background is revealed and most of what is seen is her bordering on psychopathic tendencies. From having a torture room to spurts of intense anger, Hee-ju becomes the typical crazy villain in this story though she was once a trusted friend of Kang-mu.
Mission Cross is a light watch. The plot is not unfamiliar to the viewers but that does not make it mundane. For when you do not want to get caught up in intense emotions and an intricate plot, this movie might be just the right one to watch.
Mission Cross is available on Netflix.
