Netflix recently came under scrutiny for allegedly using AI-generated artwork to promote the Korean reality cooking show Chef & My Fridge, also known as Please Take Care of My Refrigerator. This incident followed a similar controversy involving AI-generated promotional material for the animated series Arcane, based on the popular game League of Legends.

Recently, Netflix announced the revival of Chef & My Fridge, with a new season set to premiere on January 12, 2025. To promote the upcoming season, Netflix released a poster depicting a chef opening a refrigerator.

Eagle-eyed viewers quickly noticed anomalies in the image, such as fridge handles positioned inside the doors and melting bananas, suggesting the use of AI-generated art.

Chef & My Fridge, originally titled Please Take Care of My Refrigerator, is a popular Korean reality cooking show that aired from 2014 to 2019. The program features celebrity guests who bring their personal refrigerators to the studio, where top Korean chefs are challenged to create gourmet dishes using only the ingredients found inside.

The show combines elements of surprise, culinary creativity, and personal storytelling, making it a favorite among viewers.

Alleged AI-generated promotional material used by Netflix for Arcane, similar to Chef & My Fridge

In November 2024, Gamesraddar reported that Netflix faced backlash after fans noticed that a promotional poster for Arcane season 2 appeared to have been modified using generative AI.

Viewers pointed out anatomical inaccuracies, such as distorted hands, which are common indicators of AI-generated imagery. The image was subsequently removed. Riot Games, the developer behind League of Legends, responded immediately on X.

Alex Shahmiri, Arcane's brand lead, stated,

"Appreciate you bringing this to our attention. We have a strict stance of no AI for anything relating to Arcane cause it's disrespectful to the incredible artists who worked on the show. This image was a mistake and has since been removed. [Thank you] again for calling it out."

Previously, the streaming giant was accused of using AI to alter photographs in the true crime documentary What Jennifer Did, which focused on Jennifer Pan. In that instance, AI was reportedly used to modify existing images, leading to debates about the ethical implications of such practices.

In response to the backlash over the Arcane poster, Netflix promptly removed the AI-generated image and acknowledged the mistake. Netizens argued online that ensuring that promotional materials meet quality standards and respecting the contributions of human artists is essential for maintaining viewer trust and upholding artistic integrity.

Netizens also mentioned that Arcane and Chef & My Fridge's cases highlighted how Netflix must balance innovation and ethical responsibility, ensuring that the use of AI enhances rather than detracts from the creative industries and artists' hard work.

Chef & My Fridge will air on Netflix on January 12, 2025, featuring Kim Seong-joo, Ahn Jung-hwan, and other celebrity guests.
