Netflix confirms the production of Byun Sung-hyun's new movie Good News: Everything we know so far

On September 27, 2024, Netflix announced the production of director Byun Sung-hyun's upcoming film, Good News. This is his second Netflix project after Kill Boksoon (2023).

The global streaming platform shared pictures of the table read session of the cast with the news on social media. The post from Netflix states:

NEW NETFLIX FILM Set in 1970, GOOD NEWS (WT) depicts a suspicious operation to land a hijacked plane by any means necessary.

Good News: Plot, characters, and more

Netflix's synopsis for the film reads:

"Set in 1970, the film depicts a suspicious operation carried out by a group determined to land a hijacked airplane by any means necessary."

The film set in 1970, follows a secret mission to land a hijacked plane. A mysterious problem solver, whose identity is unknown, leads the operation. Joining him are an Air Force First Lieutenant and a government official who oversees the mission.

Sul Kyung-gu plays the enigmatic problem-fixer. This marks his fourth collaboration with Byun after The Merciless, Kingmaker, and Kill Boksoon. Hong Kyung stars as the lieutenant, while Ryu Seung-bum portrays the government official.

The film raises high expectations for the on-screen synergy between Sul Kyung-gu, Hong Kyung, and Ryu Seung-bum.

Good News is inspired by a real-life airplane hijacking incident from the 1970s. Netflix described the film as:

"A film depicting the suspicious strategies of a group of people gathered to land a hijacked plane by any means necessary."

Director Byun is known for nuanced storytelling and exploring complex relationships in his films. His 2017 film, The Merciless, was showcased at Cannes.

He won Best Director for Kingmaker (2022) at the Baeksang Arts Awards and Grand Bell Awards. Good News promises to deliver a thrilling, conflict-filled narrative. The film is being produced also by Star Platinum production.


Previous projects of the cast

Sul Kyung-gu is a celebrated South Korean actor. His notable films include Peppermint Candy (1999), Oasis (2002), and Silmido (2003). He has won multiple Baeksang Arts Awards, including Best Actor for Hope (2013) and Kingmaker (2022). Recently, he starred in The Whirlwind (2024).

Hong Kyung has made his feature film debut in the film Innocence (2020), which earned him a Baeksang Arts Award. He is also known for the series Weak Hero Class 1 (2022), Revenant (2023), and Troll Factory (2024).

Ryu Seung-bum is famous for films like Die Bad (2000), Arahan (2004), and The Berlin File (2013). He recently appeared in the 2023 series Moving.
