“New characters are incredibly interesting” — Wi Ha-joon shares teasers for upcoming Squid Game season 2 in latest interview

Actor Wi Ha-joon dropped some spoilers about the upcoming season 2 of Squid Game during a recent interview. He talked about the pressure surrounding the release of the famous dystopian survival series and gave a brief about his role in the new edition.

On August 29, 2024, the South Korean comedian Shin Dong Yup uploaded a video titled, "If I say more, I'll get fired" Spilling the tea on Squid Game 2 #WiHajoon | shootbro EP07, on his YouTube Channel. In the seventh episode of his YouTube corner, Shootbro, the comedian interviewed actor Wi Ha-joon, who plays Hwang Jun-ho, a police detective in the Netflix series.

The actor shared that there is an increase in the scale of the game. Talking about the new characters, Wi Ha-joon added that they would be incredibly compelling in the forthcoming season. He further mentioned:

"The new characters are incredibly interesting. The game scale has grown significantly. It's more exciting, with more to see. The character backgrounds and the set designs have all been upgraded, so I think Season 2 is even more fun."

Squid Game season 2 will premiere on December 26, 2024.

"I'm not playing a major role this time" — Wi Ha-joon on his appearance in Squid Game season 2

When asked about his appearance in season 2, Wi Ha-joon revealed that he will not be playing a prominent role in the next installment. The impact his character left in the first season would not be replicated again. He said:

"I'm not playing a major role this time. I've returned alive, and the story just shows what I'm up to. I approached it with a mindset of 'Let's say hello one more time', there is nothing that will leave a huge impact."

The Squid Game actor added that everyone involved is anxious about the release of the new season. As the show garnered worldwide popularity when it debuted on Netflix in 2021, the expectations for season 2 have risen exponentially among fans.

When one of the hosts asked for more spoilers about the story, Wi Ha-joon quickly responded:

"If I say more, I'll get fired."

In the interview, the actor also shared how the success of Squid Game helped him rise to fame with a massive increase in his Instagram following. He stated that he was shooting another drama when the audition for the role of Hwang Jun-ho came in. He did not think he would get to be part of it as the director wanted an actor who was not tied up with other projects.


Squid Game season 2 is set to premiere on December 26, 2024, with its final season coming in 2025. Netflix also teased the new characters in the game via its official YouTube channel on June 18, 2023.

Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-joon, and Gong Yoo will return for the upcoming installment. The new cast members include Im-Siwan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, Park Gyu-young, Yang Dong-geun, and more.
