NewJeans held an emergency press conference on Thursday, November 28. During the same, they stated that the members will be departing from ADOR as of November 29, 12 am KST, and have communicated with the agency regarding the termination of their exclusive contract.
Previously on November 13, the group released a statement with a 14-day ultimatum, which expressed the members' demands towards ADOR.
However, due to the agency not satisfying any of the demands raised by NewJeans, the group went forward with what they stated in the ultimatum and parted ways with the agency. The members also stated during the press conference that ADOR responded to their departure through an email. While the members didn't reveal the exact contents of the email, here's what the member Minji said:
"They sent their response an hour before and we confirmed it. The contents of the email were serious. The email stated that 14 days was not enough time, that they regretted there was no communication with ADOR, and that there were matters they couldn't address because they weren't ADOR's doing."
She continued:
"However, they took no substantial action and we had made these demands back in September as well. The email was full of lies and excuses and was merely a stalling tactic. Therefore, we are terminating our exclusive contract as of midnight on the 29th."
All you need to know about NewJeans' emergency press conference following the announcement of their departure from ADOR
On November 28, NewJeans announced their departure from ADOR and expressed their intentions to work with Min Hee-jin, the former CEO of ADOR. While the members stated that they haven't had any separate discussions with Min Hee-jin, they believe that their former CEO also shares the same thoughts as the members.
On the other hand, the members also expressed that the group might not be able to use their name, NewJeans, for promotions at the moment, as the name is trademarked by ADOR. However, they also expressed that they aren't willing to give up on the name and will fight for the same. Here's what they said:
“The five of us may not be able to use the name NewJeans for the time being, regardless of our intentions. The essence of us five being NewJeans will never change, and we have no intention of giving up the name NewJeans.”
Additionally, one of the reporters asked the members if they would have to pay any penalty fees for their sudden departure from ADOR. However, the members simply stated that none of them violated the exclusive contract and had also performed well in all their activities. Therefore, they expressed it would have to rather be HYBE and ADOR who would need to pay the penalties.
Moreover, the member Minji also talked about the motivation behind their actions. While the disbandment of K-pop groups and their departures from their agencies has not been an alien factor to the industry, it is still a rare incident. When a reporter asked what motivated or encouraged them to depart the agency, here's what she said:
"Courageous people change the world. However, courage is not given to everyone. We found our courage by looking to our Bunnies, to each other as members, and to CEO Min Heejin. If we don't take initiative in our own matters, nothing will be resolved."
ADOR released a statement following NewJeans' emergency press conference. In the statement, they expressed that they regretted seeing the members hold a press conference on the termination before reviewing their email. They also requested the members to continue working with ADOR since their contract still stands valid.
