On Thursday, November 28, 2024, the Korean media outlet Naver reported that the K-pop girl group NewJeans had scheduled an emergency press conference for the same day at 8:30 pm KST, as stated in their urgent press release.

At the press conference, the five members of the girl group are expected to discuss the legal notice they sent to their management agency, ADOR. Reportedly, this legal notice includes several demands that address NewJeans' stance in relation to ADOR and their exclusive contract with the label.

The girl group’s agency is a sublabel under the parent company HYBE. ADOR, Min Hee-jin (ex-CEO of ADOR), and HYBE have been embroiled in a legal battle for the past few months. NewJeans became involved in the controversy when they previously demanded Min Hee-jin's reinstatement as ADOR's CEO in an emergency Livestream, which HYBE did not grant.

NewJeans sent a legal notice to the HYBE's sublabel ADOR on November 14

On November 14, the five members of the girl group, Kim Minji, Hanni Pham, Danielle Marsh, Kang Haerin, and Lee Hyein, sent a legal notice to the HYBE-owned label ADOR. The legal notice stated that all major breaches of the exclusive contract must be addressed within 14 days of receiving the notice, or the girl group will end their contract.

“All major breaches of the exclusive contract be corrected within 14 days from the date of receipt of this letter, failing which we will terminate the contract.” The legal notice stated.

In addition to this, the legal notice also outlined several demands, including:

  • A formal apology from the management to Hanni, who allegedly directed members of another group to "ignore her."
  • The removal of photographs and video content utilized without the agreement of the members.
  • A resolution addressing the harms incurred from "chart manipulation" practices.
  • The resolution of conflicts with Shin Woo-seok, director of Dolphiners Films.
  • Guarantee of the safeguarding for NewJeans' distinctive character and artistic creations.

Recently, on November 21, the controversy surrounding the Korean entertainment conglomerate HYBE and Min Hee-jin reached its peak as the latter submitted her resignation as the CEO of ADOR.

In her resignation letter, disseminated via her representative, she detailed her efforts to rectify the issue, including submitting internal whistleblower emails and endeavoring to safeguard the K-pop group. She then reportedly faced opposition from HYBE. Furthermore, she stated her intention to initiate legal proceedings against HYBE subsequent to her resignation.
