On August 11, 2024, a South Korean media outlet, Yonhap News, reported that BTS' Min Yoon-gi, also known as Suga, is reportedly due to be summoned by the Yongsan Police Station in Seoul for further investigation into a driving under the influence case.
Suga is scheduled to be summoned for additional investigation and to provide a formal statement, though the exact date has not yet been set as it will depend on scheduling logistics. His management has not yet received an official summons.
Meanwhile, the police have initiated the procedure to revoke the artist's driving license.
Social media is abuzz with speculation about the potential charges the idol might face, but at this point, the primary consequence is the revocation of his driving license. It is important to note that an ongoing investigation does not necessarily lead to prosecution or a court trial.
Timeline and updates on BTS's Suga's DUI electric scooter case
The incident dates back to August 6, 2024, when the BTS rapper was reportedly caught riding an electric scooter while under the influence of alcohol. It was reported that he fell from the scooter near his home in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu.
A breathalyzer test conducted by a patrolling officer indicated that he had a blood alcohol content of 0.227%, far above the legal limit of 0.08%. At the time of his apprehension, the police could not identify Suga and because of his intoxication level, they were unable to conduct an investigation.
Instead, they gave him a breathalyzer test before letting him go home and did not take away the scooter.
Both Suga and his agency, BIGHIT Entertainment, issued an apology, admitting to his breach of traffic laws while under the influence. Suga was wearing a helmet and had travelled 500 meters before falling while he was parking the scooter.
As per Yonhap News, the outcome will depend on the results of the investigation. The Amygdala rapper could be summoned for further questioning as soon as August 16–17, depending on procedural timelines.
What will happen if his license is revoked?
If Suga's driving license is revoked, he will need to return it to the local police chief within seven days of the revocation. The BTS star may apply for a temporary driver’s license, which is valid for 40 days, but the revocation will be finalized once this temporary license expires.
There were some concerns regarding the change the artist's military service would face as a result, to which the Military Manpower Association replied that since it happened off-duty, his DUI would not affect his enlistment.
Recent reports also explained that the scooter is considered under traffic laws to be a non-personal mobility device, so the idol may potentially face criminal penalties similar to those for driving a car under the influence.
His blood alcohol level, 0.227 percent, was more than seven times the legal limit to drive in South Korea. The circumstances are still under investigation, so more details will come to light as time progresses.
Suga is currently serving as a social service worker after undergoing basic military training, with discharge scheduled for June 2025.
