On August 5, 2024, BTS Jimin dropped the YouTube video, ‘Rebirth + Slow Dance (feat. Sofia Carson)’ Live Clip Behind, on BANGTANTV. In the behind-the-scenes footage, the Grammy-nominated South Korean singer-songwriter shared an anecdote of how he used to paint his mother's nails with balsam flowers.
"When I was young, I lived in the countryside so l used to grind the balsam flower and dye my mom's nails. I remember that you need to put them on the nails and wrap something around them. Good old memories. Then the entire finger turns orange instead of just the nails. So I saw my mom cooking with all her fingers were orange."
Balsam flowers are also called garden balsam, rose balsam, touch-me-not, or spotted snapweed. Historically, Koreans used to apply crushed balsam to paint their nails or for medicinal purposes such as curing sore throats, muscle pain, and coughs. Now, it's majorly used in perfumes and incense sticks.
Fans felt happy hearing Jimin recall the memory and praised him for being a loving son. One fan underscored how it reminded them of a scene from the popular Netflix drama, Queen of Tears, where Hong Hae-in (Kim Ji-won) applied balsam flower to her nails to determine Baek Hyun-woo's (Kim Soo-hyun) love for her. The fan wrote on X,
"Reminds me of Queen of Tears"
Others praised the singer-songwriter for sharing a beautiful childhood memory of his mother. They also admired Jimin's parents for being kind and raising him in a manner where he felt safe to "express himself."
"I’m happy to hear Jimin share his childhood with Mom. He is a beautiful person," one fan wrote.
"The way I thought Jimin is talking about henna (popular in india) and immediately googled to see if that's the one. Young mimi dyed his mommy hands with his lil fingers," another fan said.
"The way his parents let him express himself even from a young age, his mom letting him paint her nails, his dad letting him put makeup on him... it's just so precious to see," another fan added.
Admirers hailed the BTS idol's parents as the "best parents" while some fans drew comparisons to the popular Anime and manga, The Apothecary Diaries. In the manga, the lead, Maomao, uses balsam flowers to paint the nails of every lady-in-waiting.
"This was the best part. My bby grew up loved so DEARLY BY HIS PARENTS and he's so freaking adorable," one fan commented.
"You wonder why he's so soft-hearted, well-mannered, and lovely? Because he was raised like a tender flower by the best parents. They raised him to be the best human," one other fan added.
"Reminds me of the episode in apothecary diaries," another fan said.
