BLACKPINK's Jennie has dropped the official music video of her latest comeback solo single, Mantra. The music video was released under her company, ODDATELIER, in partnership with Columbia Records. Fans have noted that the opening scene from the MV references the classic cult movie Rush Hour.
For the unversed, Rush Hour is a 1998 Hollywood film starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. The scene in question features a little girl wearing a school uniform sitting in the back of a car while two Asian men drive her to school.
In Mantra, the BLACKPINK rapper and CEO of ODDATELIER recreated the iconic scene, where the little girl could also be heard singing the lyrics of the song. Social media has been flooded with fans recognizing the scene, lauding the BLACKPINK rapper for her creativity in highlighting the Asian diaspora. One fan on X wrote:
Astute admirers hailed praises for the rapper's creativity and visuals from her latest track MV. The upbeat song weaved with references from cult classics underscored her way of giving an ode to them.
"THE RUSH HOUR REFERENCE IN THE BEGINNING OF MANTRA ??? OH JENNIE YOURE A GENIUS," a fan wrote.
"Jennie referencing Rush Hour in the music video for “Mantra” adds a fun pop culture element to her visuals," another fan said.

Others called her a "genius" for adding an "extra layer of depth" to her solo releases.

BLACKPINK's Jennie preaches women empowerment and female friendships in her latest hit Mantra
Jennie's latest song, Mantra, explores themes of women's empowerment and healthy female friendships. The lyrics focus on how she is close with her female best friends as sisters and would do anything to protect them. The song also touches on the themes of women having the right to have fun and controlling the reins of their own lives.
Mantra marks the BLACKPINK rapper's first official solo release under her company, ODDATELIER. Previously, she was signed under the K-pop company YG Entertainment, where she debuted as a member of BLACKPINK in 2016. In December 2023, she ended her solo contract with YG and founded her label.
Since then, she has been working on her solo projects and her upcoming debut solo album. However, she was also featured on American singer Matt Champion's track, Slow Motion, released in March 2024. Later, South Korean rapper and CEO of KOZ Entertainment, Zico, released his single SPOT! feat. Jennie in April 2024.
