Fans have been buzzing with speculation after NewJeans' Hanni subtly updated her Phoning status with a cryptic emoji, sparking widespread reactions online. This move came just after her agency, ADOR, released an official statement on November 27, 2024, addressing the ongoing controversy surrounding the group.

The statement followed a period of tension between NewJeans and BELIFT LAB (another subsidiary under the HYBE umbrella), with the girl group accusing a BELIFT LAB staff member of instructing other artists to ignore her during an incident in May. ADOR came forward to support the claims, stating that their artist's recollection of the event differed significantly from the explanation offered by BELIFT LAB.

In what seemed to be a response to the recent events, Hanni’s update to her Phoning status caught the attention of fans. Although she did not directly comment on the statement or the controversy, the emoji she posted appeared to express displeasure, leading fans to link the two.

Fans swiftly showed their solidarity by sharing the same emoji, suggesting that it could symbolize NewJeans’ indifference toward the situation. Some fans also speculated that the emoji hinted at the group's potential decision to end their contract with ADOR, amid ongoing internal conflicts involving former CEO Min Hee-jin and HYBE. An X user, @marstermoo62122, wrote,

"she's about to walk outta that place with her heels on and I'm here cuz of it."

Despite the official backing, fans of NewJeans, particularly Hanni, felt that the statement came too late and was insufficient in addressing the issue. Many were frustrated that ADOR’s brief response did not reflect the seriousness that they believed the situation warranted.

"The realest expression. She was not impressed," an X user commented.
"Neither are we hanni," a fan mentioned.
"That emoji has more meaning than the fraudor words," a netizen wrote.
"i'm crying hanni actually did the funniest thing," a user remarked on X.

As the situation unfolds, fans continue to show their support for Hanni while hoping for a resolution that will allow the group to move forward without further issues.

"Even Hanni was so DONE of their stupid games," a fan commented.
"Like they do not genuinely think that, they are releasing that because they have to do something and even then,it was barely an action," a person wrote.

More about ADOR's statement regarding NewJeans' Hanni and the ongoing internal feud with HYBE

The controversy first erupted in September 2024 after all five members of NewJeans shared their discomfort with the incident during a YouTube live broadcast. This led to several complaints filed with the Ministry of Employment and Labor, which focused on the working conditions of K-pop idols.

In a subsequent appearance at the National Assembly, the NewJeans member voiced her frustration, questioning why such behavior had been tolerated in the industry, and stressed the importance of not allowing mistreatment to be ignored.

ADOR released a statement where it expressed disappointment over the situation, emphasizing its trust in Hanni’s account and highlighting the emotional toll the incident had taken on her. The statement read,

"Ador and Ador members completely trust the words of our artist and truly feel sorry for the damage that Hani has suffered. We hope that Belift Lab will not take Hani's damage lightly and show mutual respect, and we hope that they will show a sincere attitude so that unnecessary controversy about Ador's artists will not continue."

On November 13, as per Korea Times, NewJeans reportedly warned their agency ADOR that they would terminate their contracts unless "grave breaches" of their agreements were addressed within 14 days.
