On Thursday, September 26, New5 Phillphines released a news telecast on BTS' Taehyung's fitness updates. The anchor talked about the idol's recent Instagram story, in which he showcased his physique at the gym.
While most of the news revolved around the idol and his gym update, the anchor mentioned BLACKPINK's Jennie as his girlfriend towards the end. This was used as a transition by News5 Philippines to shift from BTS V's gym updates to the news surrounding Jennie's upcoming solo comeback.
Many were displeased with Jennie being presented as Taehyung's girlfriend. People pointed out that a reputed news channel referring to rumors was "unprofessional."
Since 2022, there have been several rumors and theories about the possible romantic relationship between BTS' Taehyung and BLACKPINK's Jennie. This resurfaced when the two K-pop idols were allegedly spotted walking together in Paris, France, in May 2023. However, there is no confirmation or official news regarding their relationship.
Therefore, when the news channel referred to Jennie as V's girlfriend, many criticized the channel.
"What is this behavior?! you’re a news channel yet using a baseless online rumor acting like a fact for a news beat is so unprofessional, no credibility whatsover," one tweeted.
"It’s unprofessional to spread misinformation. Stop relying on random internet articles pushing the same clout-chasing agenda using his name. You’re a news program, not a gossip channel," said a fan on X.
"I was smiling watching this then my face turned sour. Why do you put them together in one report," added another fan.
More netizens said that it was unnecessary to put the two K-pop idols together and spread misinformation regarding them.
"unprofessional journalism on its peak linking a totally unrelated person as a transition, a baseless rumour which has been already acknowledged as defamation. pushing the same clout chasing agenda using his name. you should be ashamed of yourselves," stated a netizen.
"A news program relying on rumors to connect two unrelated reports? Stop using him for other’s cb! Such a shame!," commented an X user.
"Did I hear gf??? Unprofessionalism at peak. Do better," stated an X user.
