On September 4, 2024, South Korean media outlet Newsen reported that all four members of aespa, Giselle, Winter, Ningning, and Karina along with EXO leader Suho, have taken legal action against the controversial YouTuber Sojang for spreading malicious rumors. Known for numerous lawsuits from K-pop idols, Sojang is also called Taldeok Camp or Quitting Fandom Center (in Korean).
The publication also reported that SM Entertainment, representing EXO and aespa, issued an official statement revealing that they had taken legal action against the YouTuber Sojang in April.
The first trial of aespa and Suho's case took place on September 2 at the Incheon District Court. The controversial creator was indicted for violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, including charges of defamation.
During the trial, Sojang admitted to creating the videos but denied the defamation and obstruction of business charges. Their lawyer argued that there was no intent to defame and that the content was believed to be true, claiming it was merely an expression of opinion, not defamation.
EXO's Suho and aespa join Wonyoung, V, Jungkook, and other K-pop idols in filing a lawsuit against YouTuber Sojang
Before aespa members and Suho, the 35-year-old YouTuber has previously faced legal challenges from several celebrities, including IVE's Jang Won-young, Kang Daniel, BTS' Jungkook, and V.
Wonyoung and her agency, Starship Entertainment pursued a defamation lawsuit seeking damages, with the case still ongoing. Earlier this year, the Seoul Central District Court partially favored the IVE member in a lawsuit for 100 million won in damages due to defamation.
As of the recent, BTS members V and Jungkook, alongside their agency BIGHIT Music, are also taking legal action against the same, filing for 90 million won in damages. The 12th Civil Division of the Seoul Western District Court is set to hold the initial hearing on March 23, five months after the lawsuit was lodged.
BIGHIT Music has been actively pursuing legal action against individuals who violate the rights of its artists. They have been involved in multiple lawsuits for defamation, insults, and other malicious activities against BTS, emphasizing their commitment to strict legal measures.
Amid the ongoing lawsuit, a 2021 comment from Taehyung resurfaced online. V saw the YouTuber's content through the fan community platform Weverse. Responding to a fan who shared a screenshot of the video, the idol commented that such individuals are disliked by all artists and that he would sue on behalf of those affected.
"I just saw it on the outside, and all the artists, not just us, don't like that kind of person.ARMY might or might not have monitored it, but I'll sue you on behalf of those who were hurt and didn't have the courage."
In a reply to another fan's advice to ignore the posts, V assured them of his mental resilience, likening himself to Suga in his strength.
Meanwhile, further details about the lawsuit filed by aespa members and EXO are yet to be disclosed.
It was also revealed that the YouTuber earned 250 million KRW from unethical activities, specifically through the posting of 23 videos between October 2021 and June 2023.
