On August 16, 2024, BLACKPINK's rapper Lisa dropped her latest single, NEW WOMAN, accompanied by a music video. Released on her label's official YouTube channel, @wearelloud, the track features Spanish singer Rosalía.
Directed by Dave Meyers and co-written by Swedish singer Tove Lo, the music video received praise for its portrayal of empowered women exuding pride and confidence.
"Focus on my mind/Taking my time/I'm a new woman, woman," Lisa sings.
In the video, elements from the Y2K era took center stage as well. This was reflected in the use of vintage devices like flip phones with keypads and cheetah-print outfits from the early 2000s.
As fans tuned in to the music video, they flocked to social media to commend Lisa for embodying the "pop star" title bestowed upon her by her supporters. One user on X, @bIinksupreme, wrote,
"solidifying herself as a main pop girl lisa you are insane."
"There is something about Lisa that says, I’m in my own league. I always knew she would have a successful solo career. Even in Blackpink she had such an undeniable presence ," a fan commented on X.
"new woman absolutely just dethroned all of her discography," another user wrote.
"Guys she’s genuinely THE moment. This song, the video, the fact she’s a writer on it, the fact she got Rosalia on the track, the INSTRUMENTALS, THE VOCALS, THEY LOOK SO GOOD," another fan remarked.
"GOD BLESS WOMEN," another user commented on X.
Several fans pointed out that the idol's departure from YG Entertainment for her solo endeavors was a smart move, allowing her to fully explore her creative potential.
"LISA's creativity has really been showing ever since she left YG," a fan wrote.
"lisa would’ve never sounded like this if she was still at YG WHAT," another user commented.
"Her growth from debut to now yes, but after she left yg is a no she has it all along yg was hold her back, glad she has her own company for her to explore," another user remarked.
Exploring BLACKPINK's Lisa's solo ventures
In December 2023, it was revealed that BLACKPINK members would be leaving YG Entertainment to pursue solo projects, although they would continue collaborating under YG for group activities.
Just two months later, in February 2024, Lisa announced the establishment of her label, LLOUD. She stated,
"At LLOUD, our passion as an artist management company is to create experiences that transcend genres and connect generations. Our core lies in relentless innovation and a commitment to authenticity. We're not just pushing boundaries; we're redefining them, crafting chart-topping and genre-defying music."
In April, the Money rapper signed a contract with RCA Records, an American label under Sony Music Entertainment, for her solo projects. This agreement, announced on April 10, was a collaboration between RCA and LLOUD.
Her debut single under these new ventures, ROCKSTAR, was released on June 28, 2024, and quickly amassed over 153 million views on YouTube. The Thai rapper has now launched her second single, NEW WOMAN.
Additionally, the dancer-rapper is set to perform at the 2024 Global Citizen Festival as a co-headliner, marking her first solo appearance at a music festival along with other headliners, including Post Malone and Doja Cat, in Central Park, New York City, in September.
The BLACKPINK star is also expected to feature in the upcoming third season of HBO’s dark comedy series The White Lotus.
