On October 8, 2024, the five-member K-pop band POW officially announced the release of their second extended play album, Boyfriend. With a title track of the same name, the announcement of the upcoming song was made through the group's official X account, sending the fans into a frenzy.
The post explained that the title track would be the remake of Avril Lavigne's hit track Girlfriend, remade in POW's unique style. The band captioned their X post:

The South Korean boy band POW was formed by Grid Entertainment in 2023 and features five members - Hyunbin, Yourch, Jungbin, Dongyeon, and Hong.
