On January 3, 2025, Sports Donga reported that South Korean actress Won Ji-an, who gained widespread recognition for her role in Squid Game season 2, is reportedly set to star alongside Park Seo-joon in the upcoming JTBC romantic-comedy drama, Waiting for Gyeongdo.

According to news outlet, both actors are in discussions to lead this new series, with production anticipated to commence once casting is finalized.

Waiting for Gyeongdo is a romantic comedy that explores the reunion of former lovers, Lee Kyung-do and Seo Ji-woo, who navigate the complexities of rekindled relationships. The drama is set to be directed by Im Hyun-wook, known for his work on King the Land.

Renowned for his roles in Gyeongseong Creature and Itaewon Class, Park Seo-joon is in talks to portray the male lead, Lee Kyung-do, a character whose past relationship becomes central to the narrative. Won Ji-an is being considered for the role of the female lead, Seo Ji-woo, whose reunion with Kyung-do forms the crux of the story.

While specific plot details remain under wraps, the series is expected to blend humor and heartfelt moments, which are characteristic of successful K-dramas in this genre.

Won Ji-an wins hearts with her character in Netflix's Squid Game season 2

Squid Game season 2 premiered on December 26, 2024, continuing the mortifying narrative of survival and moral dilemmas. The season reintroduced the original season's protagonist, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who became engaged in the deadly games once more.

With the intention of overthrowing the system from the inside, Gi-hun spearheaded a rebellion against the game's organizers this time. In addition to focusing on societal themes like income inequality and the exploitation of the weak, the season dug further into the histories of new participants.

Won Ji-an played the character of Se-mi, designated as Player 380, who debuted in episode 4 of Squid Game. Se-mi entered the deadly game with the personal motive to win the grand prize and turn her life over. Her character was showcased as a street-smart, cutthroat, and extremely determined individual.

Se-mi, however, died in the second season after being ambushed by other players in the dark when everyone was asleep. Won Ji-an received widespread acclaim for her depiction of the shrewd, tough, and bold Se-mi, who nearly outwitted every opponent, even Thanos (played by T.O.P. of BIGBANG).

The second season culminated in a climactic confrontation where Gi-hun's rebellion is thwarted by internal betrayal and the unwavering control of the game's orchestrators. Significant character deaths occurred, and the power dynamics within the game's hierarchy were further exposed.

The finale left viewers with unresolved questions and anticipations for the third and final season, slated for release in June 2025.

Won Ji-an debuted with a small role in the popular Korean Netflix series D.P., starring Jung Hae-in and Son Suk-ku. She was then seen in dramas such as Boy's Flight, Boy's Flight 2, When You Make a Wish, and My Heart Beats. She made a comeback in D.P. Season 2 with an increased screen time compared to the pilot season.

The potential collaboration between Won Ji-an and Park Seo-joon has generated significant excitement among K-drama enthusiasts. As Waiting for Gyeongdo progresses through the pre-production stages, audiences eagerly await further announcements regarding its storyline and broadcast schedule.
