Netflix dropped its brand-new limited series Hierarchy starring Lee Chae-min, No Jeong-ee, and Kim Jae-won on June 7, 2024. The plot centers on an elite school, Jooshin High, where 0.01% of rich families in South Korea control the order. Among all the students, four students hail from the wealthiest families.
Kim Ri-an (Kim Jae-won) is the sole chaebol heir to Jooshin Group, who founded Jooshin High School. Jung Jae-i (No Jeong-ee) is the heiress of Jaeyul Group and Ri-an's girlfriend. The other two of the elite group that rules Jooshin High are Lee Woo-jin, the youngest son of a big politician, and Yoon He-ra, the daughter of the CEO of International Yoon. The story revolves around high school bullying, societal hierarchy, power structures, and the brutal death of a student.
Jae-i returns from America after three months and meets Ri-an at a Formula 1 race track where she challenges him for a race with a condition that the loser has to grant the winner's wish at any cost.
Both of them race one another in a Lamborghini Aventador and a Ferarri. Jae-i wins and in return, she breaks up with Ri-an and asks him to respect her wish.
Many viewers were stunned to see the visuals and cinematography of Hierarchy, however, they lightheartedly joked about it being the most "expensive" breakup. They flooded social media with their views on the scene and discussed that everything in the new series was extravagant.
"Can we all agree that this is the most extravagant break up ever"
"Can’t wait for #Hierarchy season 2. The suspense and ending is killing me! Also this is the most expensive breakup in the history of breakups ever!" an X user wrote.
"The hottest and expensive breakup ever I keep repeating this scene," a netizen commented.
"So rich that I can break up in stadium race tracks please," another X user wrote.
Some viewers observed that even though the particular scene in Hierarchy shows Jae-i breaking up with Ri-an, the cinematography delivers a much deeper symbolism of their love.
"I HAVEN'T EVEN SEEN THEM BUILD THEIR RS AND THEIR BREAK UP HURTS AF," a user wrote on X.
"Idk if this has symbolism but like their shadows are holding hands c'mon," another fan wrote.
"This shot was so coool!!! theyre holding hands in the shadow but in reality hes failing to reach her," a netizen complimented the scene.
Netflix's new series Hierarchy hints at a season 2
Netflix's big-budget limited series Hierarchy wowed viewers with its cinematography, plot, and fresh faces. Fans believe former Music Bank's MC, Lee Chae-min, has delivered a stellar performance as Kang Ha, who joins Jooshin High as a new scholarship student.
Meanwhile, another highlight of the show is the elite high school couple, Kim Ri-an and Jung Jae-i (No Jeong-ee). Despite her breaking up with him, Ri-an's devotion and love towards Jae-i do not waver. He becomes more determined to protect her as someone tries to dig up the truth behind In-han's death—the 17-year-old student who gets brutally bullied and murdered at Jooshin High.
It is later revealed that Jae-i broke up with Ri-an (Kim Jae-won) to protect him because of blackmail from an anonymous account. Jae-i goes to every length against Kang Ha to protect Ri-an even after learning that In-han was Kang Ha's older brother who got murdered.
She tells Kang Ha that Ri-an is not behind In-han's death, but admits they all quietly watched when In-han was being bullied in school. Kang Ha vows to avenge his brother's (In-han) death.
The ending scene hints at a second season with a new cast addition. The first season leaves viewers on a cliffhanger as it ends with the death of another student and Kang Ha walking in the school corridor with a sinister smile.
Netflix's latest limited series, Hierarchy, has seven episodes and is available for streaming on Netflix.
