On October 9, 2024, a Korean critic shared his views on BTS' Jungkook's missed opportunity to perform at the National Football League (NFL) Super Bowl Halftime Show with Daily Sports. Ahead of his enlistment, the BTS idol released a remix version of his song, Standing Next To You, with American pop singer Usher. As per reports, Usher invited Jungkook to share the stage at the 2023 Super Bowl.

However, since the BTS singer was scheduled to enlist in the South Korean military on December 12, 2023, he couldn't perform at the Super Bowl. For the unversed, Jungkook released his debut solo album, GOLDEN, on November 3, 2023. Standing Next To You (USHER remix) was released on December 15, 2023, via BIGHIT MUSIC (now HYBE Labels).

It is important to note that if the BTS idol could have performed on the stage, he would have become the first K-pop artist and Asian act to have performed at the Super Bowl. Korean cultural critic Kim Heon-sik weighed his two cents on the subject and said that the missed opportunity was "the result of HYBE overlooking" the significance of a Super Bowl performance.

“The cancellation of Jungkook’s Super Bowl halftime performance was the result of HYBE overlooking the importance of this stage. I feel deep regret for the management of the artist.”

For the uninitiated, the NFL's annual championship game is known as the Super Bowl. It is played between the National Football Conference (NFC) winners and the American Football Conference (AFC).

It's one of the most-watched international sporting events globally and the most-watched American broadcast event each year. Celebrities like Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, and Rihanna have performed at the NFL Super Bowl.

More about BTS' Jungkook's achievements as a solo artist

In 2022, Jungkook became the first K-pop and Korean act to perform at the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony in Qatar. He also became the first Korean act to record the FIFA World Cup anthem, Dreamers, released on November 20, 2022.

On November 3, 2023, he released his debut solo album with 11 English songs, including the title track, Standing Next To You. The track topped the Billboard Global 200 charts and became the third song from the same album to top the music chart after the pre-released singles SEVEN and 3D. Currently, Standing Next To You has amassed over 937 million streams on Spotify.

SEVEN debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and maintained the spot for seven consecutive weeks, making the BTS idol the first K-pop soloist to achieve this milestone. The track also amassed 1 billion streams within 108 days, surpassing Miley Cyrus' record of 112 days for her song, Flowers. Jungkook's SEVEN became the fastest song by a global artist to record this feat in Spotify history.

Currently, the BTS idol is serving his mandatory service in the South Korean military. He will return in June 2025 to resume group activities.
