On November 1, 2024, Netflix announced the production of its new series The WONDERfools. To mark the announcement, Netflix shared photos from the cast's first script reading and confirmed the casting lineup. The star-studded cast included popular actors Park Eun-bin, Cha Eun-woo, Kim Hae-sook, Choi Dae-hoon, Im Sung-jae, and Son Hyun-joo.

Netflix's The WONDERfools: Plot and cast details
The WONDERfools is set in Haeseong City in 1999, a year filled with apocalyptic fears. The story follows a group of misfits who gain superpowers and end up defending their city against looming threats. Netflix has described it as a "superpower comic action" that combines comedy and action with a nostalgic look at the turn of the century.
Park Eun-bin will play Eun Chae-ni, known as Haeseong's biggest trainwreck. Chae-ni is smart, polite, diligent, charming, funny, and unpredictable. She is the granddaughter of a wealthy restaurant owner. However, her unique perspective on life makes her stubborn as she grows up. She lives on thin ice, with her dreams of a train trip always just out of reach.
Living in 1999, Chae-ni gains superpowers, turning her routine into a chaotic, humorous adventure filled with empathy. In The WONDERfools, Cha Eun-woo plays Lee Woon Jung, a socially awkward, rule-abiding civil servant from Seoul, newly hired in Haeseong, often frustrating his colleagues with his strict principles.
Outside of City Hall, however, he reveals a mysterious side. When a series of disappearances occurs in Haeseong, Woon Jung teams up with Chae-ni to investigate. His curiosity and dedication drive him to explore the truth behind these incidents, adding intrigue to his character.
Veteran actress Kim Hae-sook is taking the role of Chae-ni’s grandmother, Kim Jeon-bok. She is known for films like Thirst (2009), The Handmaiden (2016) and various drama like Start-Up (2020), Strong Girl Nam-soon (2023), Gyeongseong Creature (2024) and many more. Jeon-bok is Chae-ni’s only family member and a key figure in her life. She owns Daeson Restaurant, a well-known establishment in Haesong City.
Her character has a vibrant and intriguing background, filled with both light and shadows. This colorful past adds depth to her role and piques the audience's curiosity.
Choi Dae-hoon will portray Son Kyung-hoon, the notorious troublemaker of Haeseong. Im Sung-jae will play Kang Robin, known as the biggest pushover in the city. Son Hyun-joo portrays Ha Won-do, a character shrouded in mystery. The series is written by Huh Dah-joong, the screenwriter behind Extreme Job, who will bring his signature humor to this project.
