On January 15, 2025, Korean media Star News published an exclusive interview with When The Phone Rings’ writer Kim Ji-woon. The suspenseful romantic K-drama, When The Phone Rings, recently wrapped up with the finale episode on January 4, 2025, via the MBC TV network. The drama featured Yoo Yeon-seok and Chae Soo-bin in the main roles.

During the interview, Kim Ji-woon was asked about how they decided to cast Yoo Yeon-seok and Chae Soo-bin as the couple in the drama. The writer replied that the actors’ chemistry was “amazing” and also that they looked great together.

“I saw them individually and together, and their chemistry was amazing. They looked so good together. Even the director mentioned that he could see my mood lifting in real time,” Kim Ji-woon stated.

Kim Ji-woon also discussed how they chose Yoo Yeon-seok and Chae Soo-bin as the show's actors. Ji-woon said that the melodramatic performance of Yeon-seok in his drama Interest of Love had impressed her.

She went on to say that Soo-bin's sweetness and subtle sensitivity suited the show's female protagonist's personality.

“Yoo Yeon-seok’s melodramatic acting in “The Interest of Love” deeply impressed me. As a female viewer, I wanted to see more of his melodramatic acting. I can’t imagine anyone but Yoo Yeon-seok as Baek Sa-eon. Chae Soo-bin was incredibly lovable."

She added:

" The character Hee-joo had to be convincing, and I thought Chae Soo-bin’s loveliness and subtle vulnerability matched Hee-joo perfectly.”

Kim Ji-woon commented on When The Phone Rings’ finale bed scene during the interview

In the interview, the writer also talked about the bed scene of the leads in episode 12 of When The Phone Rings. She acknowledged that Yoo Yeon-seok and Chae Soo-bin’s intimate scene garnered much attention on social media. She further commented about how she wrote the scene and how it turned out on screen.

“In the script, I simply wrote “a thin sheet” to describe it, and they portrayed it beautifully. I heard Yoo Yeon-seok prepared references extensively, and the director captured the scene wonderfully. At the wrap-up party, we all watched that scene together. Everyone cheered loudly, and someone even shook a tambourine,” stated Kim Ji-woon.

Recently, Yoo Yeon-seok and Chae Soo-bin’s bed scene also caught fans’ attention after it was revealed that the scene was originally filmed in a cafe in Jeju Island. The scene was filmed at Urban Jungle cafe, as stated by the Instagram account @kdramalocation.

When The Phone Rings started airing on the MBC TV network on November 22, 2024 and ran till January 4, 2025. This romantic suspense story is adapted from Geon Eomul Nyeo's novel The Number You Have Dialed (지금 거쇠 전화는).
