Red Velvet's vocalist Joy has completed the renewal process of her exclusive contract with her longtime agency, SM Entertainment. On January 14, 2025, MK Sports reported that Joy had renewed her contract with the agency, expressing her wish to continue their professional partnership.
In a statement, she explained that she finalized her decision based on the trust she and the entertainment company have maintained over the past ten years.
“I had deep conversations with those who have been with me for 10 years based on trust and belief, and I felt that I wanted to move forward together in a good direction in the future. I will do my best to show my fans various sides of myself through positive synergy with SM.”
However, fans have expressed their concerns online, believing that the agency allegedly mistreated the girl group Red Velvet in the past. They also hope that with this new beginning, the agency would work better to help Red Velvet and Joy put out the best projects.
"I was hoping she wouldn't but now that she did they better treat her right from now. She a unique gem of SM," a fan said.
“She stayed because of her love for Red Velvet, so please respect her. She's a grown woman who's capable of making her own decisions. All I hope for is that she gets the better treatment she truly deserves. Now, give me that PSY1!,” another fan added.
Some Red Velvet fans respected Joy's decision to continue being a part of SM Entertainment.
“Joy is insanely smart so i'm sure she knows what's best for herself, but at the same time, I hope she brought a gun to that meeting bc i'm sick of blatant mistreatment towards her,” a user commented.
“I know damn well that she went into that meeting with DEMANDS i trust her judgment especially since she's been the most vocal about her disdain for the way sm has been treating the group,” another user commented.
“Well I'm both happy that Joy chose to renew because I for sure get to see more Joy and I'm happy that she made A DECISION sooner rather than later But I'm also sad bc SM has been acting like their female artists are second class and I sure hope she negotiated better conditions,” a fan stated.
On the other hand, some expressed concerns as they do not trust the agency.
“Noooooo Joy, why would you do that to yourself,” a fan wrote in concern.
“Blink twice if you need help, sooyoungie,” a user said.
“sm keep sweet talking to the girls when it's around renewal period but literally left them hanging all the time!,” a fan claimed.
