Recently, fanwars have erupted between ARMYs and other fandoms due to BTS members' commercial success with their solo releases despite their ongoing military service. Several netizens have been tweeting about the alleged unfairness of the boy group's dominance even though they aren't physically present in the K-pop music industry.
People expressed that the period that was expected to be absent of the group's activity in the industry was rather countered by the consistent releases from the members. Though netizens have been talking about this for quite a while, it recently resurfaced after the announcement of Jimin's second solo album, Muse, which is scheduled to be released on July 19. In a long thread of tweets, an X user said:
"finally a tweet on my tl that addresses this bc can we talk about how abnormal these solo releases during enlistment is ESPECIALLY when it was implied 1. You literally could do NO WORK WHATSOVER during enlistment 2. The “culturally” accepted blackout of idols during enlistment."
"Do people think it was a joke or overestimation to label enlistment as a career stopper. Like it literally use to “break” groups stopping their momentum and forcing them to essentially start from scratch in garnering general public popularity.
"Is this a new era of enlistment era’s or better to say will this spark a new era of enlistment where companies will start vaulting albums to release during group/member enlistments," the X user said in another tweet.
However, when these X posts began to pile up on the internet, ARMYs defended the members. They stated that no rule or restriction prevents the members from releasing pre-recorded music and that they deserve to bear the profits.
Additionally, ARMYs believe that the members put in hard work and effort to prepare music released before enlisting in the military which makes it fair for the members. Here's what the netizens stated:
"They wanted them to go for military service so that their fave could shine, now that they are what happened to their faves’ shine. Now they are realizing they were never in the race in the first place," one fan on X said.
"Kpoppies are only pretending to not understand how BTS can release music they pre recorded whilst in the military. They are just hurt that now it’s OBVIOUS other idols didn’t feel like doing the same and never put in the amount of work or effort BTS always has," added an X user.
"I actually think they can't put in that much effort, like BTS works so hard even we don't understand where the hell they found the time. It's not normal to be able to do this, but instead of realising how hard BTS work, they're thinking it's unfair. It's unfair they work hard?!," said another X user.
All about BTS members' solo releases as netizens point out the alleged unfairness of the group's commercial success amidst their military service
All the BTS members enlisted in the military between December 2022 and December 2023. However, despite their enlistment, the members have been rolling out their solo releases, which were pre-recorded. Subsequently, these releases also bagged several achievements.
Following its release on May 24, RM's Right Place Wrong Person album achieved a million-seller status. This milestone added to the previous accomplishments of the members as soloists. It also made BTS the first and only group where all members have achieved a million-seller status as solo artists.
Meanwhile, Jungkook's GOLDEN is the first and the only album to reach 2 billion streams on Spotify. Jungkook also released a solo song, Never Let Go, in honor of the group's 11th debut anniversary. At the same time, V's Layover bagged the spot as the only double million seller in Hanteo's history. These are only some of the many achievements the members made as soloists.
Recently, BigHit Entertainment announced the release of Jimin's second album, Muse, which is scheduled for July 19. Therefore, fans have been preparing to support the idol's continuation into his solo career. The album has seven tracks, including the idol's previously released single, Closer Than This.
Moreover, following Jin's return from mandatory military service, the idol revealed plans to restart his solo career. Before his enlistment, he made his debut through the single, The Astronaut, in October 2022.
Recently, it was revealed that the idol will be rolling out his first full-length solo album in the second of 2024. However, further details regarding this have yet to be announced.
