On Tuesday, September 10, the K-pop boy group BOYNEXTDOOR appeared on the South Korean variety show, K-Star Next Door, hosted by Jonathan, During their appearance, the host jokingly brought up the similarities between the group's name and the show's name. He also added that the show began before the group's debut.
While K-Star Next Door premiered in 2022, BOYNEXTDOOR debuted in 2023. Jonathan also jokingly asked if the similarities were due to plagiarism.
"The English title of this show is K-Star Next Door. Then we noticed that in 2023, BOYNEXTDOOR debuted. Could this be plagiarism? Should we demand your father for royalty?"
As a response to this, member Lee Han stated that HYBE usually checks trademark rights before choosing their K-pop groups' names.
"When we register the trademark rights, HYBE checks it thoroughly."
Additionally, Sungho also emphasized that they are from HYBE, hinting that they've got a strong backup in case of plagiarism allegations. However, the environment was largely playful. However, Jonathan soon shot back that he had support from his agency, CJ ENM.
This statement soon caused a chaotic response from the members. The visuals during this part also put HYBE and CJ ENM against each other, alluding to a battle between the two agencies. While Jonathan and the BOYNEXTDOOR members soon left the topic on a lighthearted note, the scene created quite a commotion on the internet.
Many fans talked about how the mention of HYBE and CJ ENM brought back the controversy the two parties had previously. HYBE and CJ ENM produced the K-pop boy group, ENHYPEN, together through the survival show, I-Land. However, in 2023, HYBE bought the majority of CJ ENM's stock, making HYBE the biggest shareholder of the company and making it their subsidiary.
On the other hand, fans also talked about the BOYNEXTDOOR members seemingly shading HYBE amidst the label's ongoing plagiarism controversies. Ever since the beginning of the dispute between HYBE and ADOR in April 2024, HYBE has been accused of plagiarizing several artists to create content and music for their artists.
Therefore, fans and netizens joked about Jonathan and BOYNEXTDOOR's conversation and hilariously reacted to the same.
"They started 2nd round of HYBE vs CJ," wrote one fan.
"boynextdoor about to launch a hybe vs cj legal battle because of th rights of the word "next door"," said a fan on X.
"this is too funny they threw hybe under the bus as they SHOULDDDD," added another netizen.
More netizens talked about the incident and discussed the alleged shade that the K-pop boy group threw at HYBE.
"the bnd boys literally said "well, are you still surprised?"" stated a netizen.
"We are from Hybe = ofc its plagiarism, this company is famous for this. RIGHT? Knowing that this company had multiple plagiarism controversies this year alone," said a fan.
"Jonathan is the one who usually caughts guests of guard, but not today, he was fluttered a lot more than the usual," stated an X user.
