On December 23, the global entertainment magazine Variety unveiled its list of worst songs of 2024, featuring BLACKPINK's Lisa’s New Woman. Lisa’s track was the only K-pop song in the magazine’s list. The K-pop idol made this song in collaboration with a Spanish singer, Rosalía, which made its debut on August 16, 2024.
BLACKPINK's Lisa's supporters conveyed their dissatisfaction with Variety's compilation of the worst songs. Consequently, her followers inundated the internet with their discontent with the magazine's assessment and New Woman's inclusion in the list. To express this, one user on X wrote:
“oh this is diabolical”
Many other mixed responses from netizens were seen online. While some shared the screenshots of Rolling Stone with BLACKPINK’s Lisa’s New Woman in their 2024 best songs list, others questioned why a “quality magazine” like Variety did this.
“Oopinions different when her song is the 2 best song by a solo K-pop artist .There are no BTS members....,” stated a fan.
“But lilies swear to me that this song is a quality work of art and was unfairly treated at the Grammys, why Variety, thats quality magazine, is saying this?,” commented another fan.
“I found the review of why New Woman is one of the worst funny lol. Garcia really doesn't know the Kpop music "format". @Variety You need to hire people who really understand how music work, otherwise it just sounds like a bitter person wrote this,” stated another X user.
Many fans called out music analysts, who added BLACKPINK's Lisa’s track to Variety’s new compilation of worst songs. Another fan claimed that Variety has “no taste” in music.
“B*tch you have bad taste because why is the new woman here,” commented a fan.
“Variety has no taste whatever,” another X user expressed.
“Y’all obviously wanted some clicks bc new woman? Are y’all deaf?,” wrote another fan.
BLACKPINK's Lisa’s collaboration with Rosalía in New Woman was dubbed as ‘disjointed’ by Variety
Variety’s compilation of the 2024 worst songs featured numerous songs, like Katy Perry’s Woman’s World, Nicki Minaj’s Big Foot, Jojo Siwa’s Karma, Bailey Zimmerman’s New to Country and more tracks, alongside BLACKPINK’s Lisa’s New Woman.
The magazine also provided an explanation for why each song was included on the list. According to Variety, BLACKPINK's Lisa's collaboration with Rosalía appeared 'disjointed,' given that both singers have an exceptional musical style.
“Lisa starts on her own, making the statement that she’s set on a new path of edgy experimentation, hence the title of the track. The upbeat tempo comes to a screeching halt at around the one-minute mark, and suddenly a completely new song begins. Rosalía’s entrance feels disjointed, an obvious marker that artists recorded their part separately,” Variety stated.
Earlier, on August 16, BLACKPINK's Lisa and Rosalia's New Woman achieved the biggest debut for a female duet on YouTube in 2024, surpassing the mark set by Charlie XCX and Billie Eilish's Guess by garnering 3.7 million views within four hours of the song's release. At the time of release, Guess garnered roughly 3.1 million views.
Lisa released the dance-pop and EDM trap album, New Woman, on Lloud. It was distributed globally by RCA Records and nationally by Sony Music.
