Fans of TXT's Yeonjun accused SM Entertainment of plagiarizing the concept of his solo mixtape GGUM's concept for their group WayV's upcoming EP FREQUENCY. On November 11, SM Entertainment dropped the concept photos for the album FREQUENCY on WayV's social media. In particular, Yangyang's concept images gained attention among TXT's fans.
Yangyang is seen posing with a shoe that has pink chewed gum stuck on it. Netizens noticed that the photos were allegedly similar to Yeonjun's GGUM teaser poster and music video concept. Netizens highlighted the minute details of the two concepts, including the poses made by the idols, and raised allegations against SM Entertainment for copying the TXT member.
“This is so shameless,” a fan said.
“Pink gum on shoe soles, the third picture similar to yeonjun's pose here, the mini figure, it's too much to be a coincidence,” another fan said.
“The red hair and the contacts is similar too but they'll say "anyone can have red hair and contacts!" so i'll leave that out. besides, the other similarities do enough convincing so,” a user said.
Netizens continued to criticize SM Entertainment for allegedly plagiarizing Yeonjun's solo mixtape single's concept for WayV's upcoming album.
“It’s crazy how sm is the one who always had a history of copying concepts from hybe but they turned it around with their insane mediaplay and now they just openly do it even more with no consequences whatsoever,” a user reacted.
“sm so blatantly copies hybe grps n its never called out properly but god forbid a hybe artist get a bob or wear specific shirt then its the end of the world and they hav no identity,” a user stated.
“sm stans accusing xtx of plagiarizing bc of a color and wings then here comes their faves ripping off GGUM’s entire concept,” a fan wrote.
WayV fans came in defense of Yangyang, stating that the concept has been done by other NCT groups, like NCT Dream’s Chewing Gum, and depicted the “Neo culture” style.
“The difference is Yangyang made it better . Can't believe you losers are calling pink sticky stuff under a shoe plagiarism,” a user commented
“Tf are yall in to??? If anything, this concept is SO NCT coded. This is Neo Culture,” another user commented.
“Kpop stans are so unaware of any trends and designs outside of their fav group so they think anything that looks similar is plagiarism... please go do a google search of some pink gum stuck on a shoe and you'll see hundreds of pics just like them lmao,” a fan said.
