On Friday, November 1, 2024, BLACKPINK's Jennie uploaded an Instagram story of Tyler The Creator's post about his latest album, Chromakopia. She also posted a few other stories that showcased her listening to a few songs from the album. She captioned the first story with the phrase, "pure love for this", alluding that she loved listening to the album.
However, this show of support didn't seem to sit well with fans. The American rapper, Tyler The Creator, has been criticized by netizens for his alleged homophobic comments and misogynistic lyrics in the early stages of his career. Some of his tweets now referred to as X posts, were also brought to light recently for their problematic stances.
Therefore, netizens were not happy to learn about BLACKPINK's Jennie's support of the singer in light of the recent controversies. Though many people argued that the idol couldn't have known about the controversies and was just sending support for the artist and his music, people put forth that a public figure like her should be aware of her actions and their consequences.
Here are a few reactions to BLACKPINK's Jennie uploading an Instagram story about Tyler The Creator's latest album, Chromakopia:
"oh… jennie i thought you’re a girls girl??? the way you just made a song abt women empowerment but what f is this, disgusting, you can do better than this."
"Sometimes jennie do stuff that is beyond my imagination" commented a netizen.
"she is chronically online and pretends not to know what is going on." added another fan.
"Jennie should b more aware of what she shares. Supporting music from someone with a history of objectifying women, like Selena and Victoria, feels like a slap in the face to women who’ve dealt with that kind of disrespect." said a fan on X.
However, some fans came to her defense and stated that she shouldn't be criticized for Tyler The Creator's actions and they explained that she might not be updated with his recent controversies.
"Not everyone knows about celebrities' past scandals, even for me, it's my first time knowing he said some questionable things in the past" said a fan on X.
"Why are you blaming a girl for a man’s doing and this was literally 14 years ago when she was training." commented another fan.
"Yes go on blame another woman for some man's action. Y'all are quick on hating any of the pinks as if they're the one that did something wrong." added an X user.
"the amount of REACHINGGG ppl have to do to somehow pin all he said on jennie its hilarious, like pls be serious" said another fan.
