On September 1, 2024, it was announced that BTS' Jungkook, along with fellow members Jimin and Taehyung (V), had been promoted to Corporal in the South Korean military. All three idols enlisted in December 2023 along with BTS leader RM.
The Goondori app, a popular military service tracker in South Korea, reflected the promotion of the trio from Private First Class to Corporal ranks. The app allows soldiers to monitor their rank advancements and overall progress.
Taehyung and RM achieved the status of Elite Soldiers earlier in January 2024, leading to their deployment to the 2nd Military Corps and the 15th Infantry Division, respectively. Jungkook and Jimin were stationed at the 5th Infantry Division, the same unit where BTS Jin has been serving since December 2022.
By March, all four had advanced to the rank of Private First Class. RM recently shared his promotion to Corporal via a screenshot from his military application in early August.
Fans of BTS, known as ARMYs took to social media to congratulate the three members for their recent achievements. A user on X, @weare_bts7, wrote,
"Vminkook making us proud!!! :')"
"Every member is slaying so hard," a fan wrote.
"Oh we’re so proud of our boys," another user mentioned.
"Maknae line got promoted to Corporal in the military ! Congratulations Vminkook," a fan commented on X.
Fans also pointed out that the stripes on their uniform tags will now change from two lines to three, marking their promotion to the third level. Following this, they will be eligible to attain the highest rank of Sergeant, which is symbolized by four stripes.
Some also highlighted that this achievement coincided with Jungkook's birthday on the same day.
"His rank sign will change from two lines (Private) to three lines (Corporal)," an X user mentioned.
"What a coincidence and the news that makes us most proud.. Jungkook was promoted and became a corporal on his birthday," a fan commented.
"Congratulations to JUNGKOOK he is also promoted to CORPORAL with Jiminie and V. Proud of him. Happy birthday and congratulations to your promot.," a user commented.
More military updates of all BTS members
BTS' Jin, the group's eldest member was the first one to complete his military service and was officially discharged in June. Suga is currently serving in a non-combat role as a Social Service Agent due to a previous shoulder injury.
Meanwhile, fans are now eagerly awaiting J-hope's discharge. The dancer-rapper recently marked a significant milestone by attending a recruit completion ceremony. J-hope has been serving as a drill instructor at the Baekho Recruit Training Center, part of the 36th Infantry Division.
RM and V, who enlisted in December 2023, continue to advance in their military roles. The BTS leader, recently promoted to Corporal, was seen at the Hwacheon Tomato Festival in early August, with videos of him participating in event preparations in his 15th Division military band uniform becoming widely shared.
V, a member of the Special Duty Team (SDT), made headlines for his rigorous training in a uniform reportedly weighing 20 kg. He reportedly also took part in the 2024 Ulchi Exercise Implementation, a collaborative exercise between the Republic of Korea Army and U.S. forces.
After additional training at the Army General Administration School, V was reportedly reassigned to the ROK II Corps. Jungkook and Jimin, who enlisted just a day after their fellow members, have completed their basic training and are now serving with the 5th Infantry Division.
The members of BTS are scheduled to return to the spotlight in 2025 once all the members have completed their term.
