On November 28, 2024, MBC Entertainment reported director Ryu Ho-jin's reason for casting BTS' Jin for the upcoming tvN variety show, Handsome Guys. The director stated his vision of getting a celebrity who could authentically represent Korean culture.
The Handsome Guys director elaborated that BTS fits the description and has an "approachable and authentic" demeanor. He reached out to BTS member Jin and the Grammy-nominated musician expressed a lot of interest in the show.
As per the accurate translation provided by X user, @jinnieslamp, the director said:
"Since it’s the first episode, we wanted someone who could represent Korean culture, someone approachable and authentic, rather than overly grand. BTS seemed like a great fit for this, and despite their busy schedules, we reached out to Jin. He expressed a lot of interest in participating, joined us for filming, got swept up in the chaos, and then went home."
The director also shared a behind-the-scene anecdote where the BTS superstar expressed having fun filming the show. He recalled actor Lee Yi-kyung telling the BTS idol that he should feature on the show's next season as well.
"Jin said, 'That's amazing,' and 'Is it okay to do this?' Lee Yi-kyung said, 'It's always been like this. It's okay. Shouldn't you come again next time?'"
Handsome Guys will feature the BTS idol along with South Korean actors Lee Yi-kyung (Marry My Husband) and Shin Seung-ho (Alchemy of Souls season 1 & 2). On November 20, 2024, tvN released its official teaser showcasing the cast's exciting voyage across South Korea.
