An Indian filmmaker Soham Shah sued the streaming platform Netflix, alleging that the plot of its survival thriller series, Squid Game, is copied from his Luck. Netflix has addressed the allegations, asserting that they lack merit. They pledged to advocate for the issue with vigor.

The action thriller movie Luck was released in 2009. The Indian film starred Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan, and Shruti Haasan in the main roles. The plot is based on individuals compelled to participate in games based on luck, ultimately discovering that only one among them can survive.

A group of hopeless, debt-ridden people who are tricked into playing several competitive games where they are entitled to a big cash prize. In this deadly game, losing a task means death, and each player moves one step forward. The individuals play life-threatening games to win the money.

In July 2009, Luck was globally released in theaters in India, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the UAE.

Squid Game portrays 456 players who play children's games for huge prize money

Similar to Soham Shah’s Luck, Squid Game is a survival thriller. The story of the chilling Korean show revolves around a secretive competition in which participants engage in lethal adaptations of Korean children's games, with only one winner possible. The one who prevails will receive a substantial monetary reward.

In this show, created, written, and directed by Hwang Dong Hyuk, 456 players are lured to a clandestine play to compete for the chance to earn a massive 45.6 billion won prize.

According to TMZ, the Indian director Soham Shah claimed in his lawsuit,

“The main plot, characters, themes, mood, setting and sequence of events of Squid Game are strikingly similar to that of Luck, defying any likelihood that such similarities could be coincidence,” Shah said in the suit.

Dismissing Shah's allegations, Netflix in a statement said,

“This claim has no merit. Squid Game was created by and written by Hwang Dong Hyuk and we intend to defend this matter vigorously.”

The documents also show that Shah stated in 2006 that he had written the screenplay for the picture and that it had a July 2009 release. According to multiple interviews, Hwang stated that the Netflix series concept appeared in 2008.

TMZ reported that Soham Shah alleged that the market worth of the streaming platform surged by over $900 million following the success of Squid Game. Therefore, he intended to get a portion while also suing for copyright infringement of his work.

Season 2 of Squid Game is set to come out in December this year. That will make way for season 3, which is scheduled to come out in 2025. After that, the popular Korean series will conclude. New actors like Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, Park Gyu-young, and Jeon Seok-ho will be joining the group in season 2.
