BTS’ Suga recently found himself at the center of controversy after a drink-and-drive incident, which has sparked a troubling trend known as "The Suga Challenge." This challenge has left many netizens disappointed as they struggle to understand its purpose.
Following the star's DUI controversy, many individuals have participated in this challenge, where they get drunk, sit in their cars as if preparing to drive, and post pictures online holding an alcohol bottle, claiming they are partaking in this challenge. This alarming trend is not only a blatant violation of traffic laws but also an unnecessary and irresponsible act that has left many concerned.
Fans of the artist have shared their reactions online,
“This is so stupid,” a fan exclaimed.
“Yall are NOT serious,” another fan exclaimed.
“This can't be real...” a fan in disbelief.
Other fans labeled it stupid,
“Suga Challenge is dumbest thing I’ve ever seen!!!” A fan said.
"This challenge is getting out of hand,” a fan said disappointedly.
Fans concerned about the newly emerging "Suga Challenge"
The controversy began on August 6, 2024, when Suga was caught driving under the influence of alcohol. The incident shook the K-pop world, with several pieces of evidence, including CCTV footage and a police-administered blood test, confirming his DUI.
Initially, he downplayed the situation, claiming he had only consumed a single beer. However, it was later revealed that his blood alcohol level was higher by 0.08%, which is well above the legal limit for operating a vehicle.
Driving under such conditions is illegal, and Suga’s actions not only put his own life at risk but also the lives of others. His driver’s license was subsequently suspended, and there have been discussions about potential criminal charges against him.
In response to the backlash, Suga issued a public apology via Weverse, expressing regret for his actions. He admitted he underestimated the severity of the situation, explaining that he was just driving a short distance to return home. However, his apology has done little to quell the heated reactions, as the incident has sparked widespread criticism and negativity.
"Hello, this is Suga. I come with a heavy and sorry heart to you guys due to a disappointing event. Last night after drinking at dinner, I went home by riding an electric scooter. I violated the road traffic laws due to me thinking easily that it's close distance."
He continued,
"While parking my electric scooter at the front gate in front of my place, I fell by myself, and there was a police officer near by and as a result of drinking, my license has been revoked and i've been fined. This is an inexcusable responsibility of mine so I bow my head and apologize to everyone."
Amid the controversy, social media platforms, particularly X, have seen a surge of posts featuring individuals holding alcohol bottles and claiming to participate in this challenge.
This trend has raised alarm among fans. Some believe that it is an attempt by the singer's supporters to stand by him during a difficult time, while others suspect it might be the work of anti-fans looking to further tarnish his reputation following the incident.
As the case continues to unfold, fans are hoping for a resolution that will bring this troubling chapter to a close, while also reinforcing the importance of responsible behavior and adherence to the law.
