Tao and Xu Yiyang formally revealed their relationship on July 14, 2024, via the Douyin Chinese social networking app and a Weibo post. The pair posted several photos online, which they clicked around sunset.
On July 14, they both shared TikTok videos online, where they showcased their phone wallpapers and physically appeared in each other's videos abruptly. Tao's phone lock screen had Yiyang's picture and vice versa. Other pictures of them showed the pair strolling across a field while holding hands and smiling.
Notably, Chinese singer Xu Yiyang is a former SM Entertainment trainee from SM Rookies, whereas Tao, also known as Huang Zitao, is a former EXO member.

After leaving SM Entertainment on March 15, 2018, Tao established his agency, Longtao Entertainment. This was following Kris Wu and Luhan's departure from SM Entertainment, and all three Chinese members filed a lawsuit against the company for mistreatment and disregarding their health issues.
Huang Zitao joined SM Entertainment in 2010 when he was scouted by a company official. He debuted in 2012 as a member of the K-pop band EXO. However, he departed from the company and EXO in March 2018 and went back to China to build his company.
Meanwhile, Xu Yiyang joined SM Entertainment in 2016 and became a part of the group SM Rookies. She trained under them until 2018, before leaving the company and returning to China. Tao and Yiyang met during their time at SM Entertainment.
Furthermore, Xu Yiyang signed under Tao's company, and Tao also showed immense support for her talent show, Produce Camp, despite both of them denying their relationship since 2019.
South Korean media outlet TV Report reported in October 2023 that the couple shared lunch on Valentine's Day. TV Report stated that Tao and Yiyang visited a club together in Seoul's Gangnam neighborhood. As per reports, Tao made a public declaration of his love for Yiyang at the club by displaying "I LOVE YOU" on the club's large screen.
Later, on April 29, 2024, Times Entertainment reported that Tao was spotted at a five-star hotel in Lijiang, Yunnan, China. Pictures of him went viral online on Weibo, which showed the artist wearing a white suit.
Chinese netizens further suspected that Tao proposed to Xu Yiyang for marriage at the hotel, surrounded by his close friends.
In June 2019, Huang Zitao opened a restaurant named Hao Shi and an architectural and design firm named "L. TAO Architectural and Design," further expanding his business. The same year, he dabbled in several acting projects, including the romance youth drama The Brightest Star in the Sky.
