When the Phone Rings episode 5 recap: How does Sa-eon react after finding out that Hee-joo can speak?

In episode 5 of When the Phone Rings, Sa-eon overhears Hee-joo speaking with her mother. He later asks her about Hee-joo's selective mutism. He sees Hee-joo going somewhere at the party and follows her to the terrace. While doing so, Sa-eon gets a call from Hee-joo, posing as the kidnapper. While on the terrace, he sees her, but she trips. He tries to help her, and they both end up falling to the floor.

Frustrated, he asks Hee-joo to make some sound at least; he gives up and asks her to leave first. Just then, he gets a call from Do-jae, who informs him that the caller is in the building. Worried about Hee-joo, he takes the stairs to reach her faster.

At their home, Sa-eon asks Hee-joo about the scar that she got while fleeing a dog. In a flashback, Hee-joo is shown as a child. After her mother discovers she wants to become an announcer, she gets an earful and is asked to keep her mouth shut. Frustrated, she runs out of the house but is attacked by a fierce dog.

Fortunately for her, Sa-eon comes to her rescue and asks her to fight back, whether it is her mother or her sister. He picks her on his back since she has hurt her knee.

The next day, Sa-eon is unable to focus at work. Mr. Kang mistakes it to be his fault that Sa-eon looks worried. After overhearing Kang speaks to his wife about it on the phone, he takes him aside and asks if he has no secrets in his marriage. Kang figures out that something bothers Sa-eon about his wife. He suggests letting the small things slide and putting some effort into his marriage.

In this episode of When the Phone Rings, Hee-joo receives a message informing her that she has secured her job at the presidential office. While trying to type out a message to inform Sa-eon of the same, he accidentally sends a heart-eyes emoji. In a meeting, Sa-eon is surprised and suddenly suggests going on an overnight retreat with the new employees. Sa-eon responds to Hee-jo's message by congratulating her.

In episode 5 of When the Phone Rings, Sa-eon asks his employees for suggestions on getting a gift for someone who recently landed a new job. The idea of buying a suit sounds good to him.

Sang-woo, continuing his backstory from the previous episode of When the Phone Rings, takes Yu-ri to the villa where the incident occurred. He explained that a kid offered to play together while playing with a cute cat. The kid pulls out a knife and suggests cutting the cat's tail, legs, and head. Scared, Sang-woo runs out. Sang-woo tells Yu-ri that the kid disappeared after getting adopted. On their way back, Yu-ri is informed that Hee-joo got the job.

Hee-joo goes to buy a suit, and Sa-eon comes to see if it is to her liking. He suggests she try another dress, but she refuses since she has nowhere to wear it to. Sa-eon takes her to another shop. While she is trying on the dress, he receives a call informing him that the kidnapper's voice is that of a woman's.

Seeing Hee-joo in the dress, Sa-eon is awestruck. They decide to go for dinner, which Hee-joo has promised. Right at that moment, she receives a message from Sang-woo congratulating her and celebrating it with some wine. Sa-eon suggests they go together for it.

At the dinner, Sang-woo and Sa-eon seem bitter towards each other. When Sang-woo speaks about Hee-joo's dream to become an announcer, Sa-eon interferes, and the two start an argument, and Hee-joo must stop them. She leaves. Sa-eon goes to find her. In-a texts Hee-joo, and she is surprised. In a flashback, Sa-eon is shown to be tutoring In-a with Hee-joobas the translator.

While finding Hee-ju, he receives a call from Hee-joo posing as the kidnapper. He asks her if Hee-joo has kept quiet all this while because she was asked to. Hee-joo asks him why he still wants to cling to her and whether it would change if In-a came back. He starts talking about his feelings towards Hee-joo and almost gets into an accident while crossing the road.

Hee-joo yells his name and runs towards him. She manages to push him out of the way of a truck within time. Sa-eon remembers her calling his name and asking her to say everything she wants. Back in her room, she gets another call from the real kidnapper.

In When the Phone Rings, Sa-eon decides to learn sign language to communicate better and has Hee-joo give him lessons. At team dinner, Sa-eon tries to communicate in sign language as well. He is taken aside by Do-jae, who makes him listen to the voice they derived from the phone calls. Thinking it might be Hee-joo, Sa-eon sends him a sample and asks him to find out how similar they are.

Sa-eon, drunk after the office dinner, passes out in his car after the driver has dropped him home. Hee-joo comes and finds him. Unable to wake him up, she somehow manages to bring him to their apartment, but she falls and accidentally kisses him on the lips.

Though Do-jae has messaged him, informing him that there was a 99.99% match in the two samples, Sa-eon does not see the message since he has dropped his phone on the ground. With this, episode 5 of When the Phone Rings ends.

The next episode of When the Phone Rings is scheduled to be released on December 14.
