MBC's latest drama, When the Phone Rings, premiered on November 22, 2024, delivering a captivating mix of romance and suspense. Featuring Yoo Yeon-seok, Chae Soo-bin, Heo Nam-joon, and Jang Gyu-ri, the series explores the complexities of a couple in their third year of a politically motivated marriage, which is shaken by the arrival of a cryptic phone call.

When the Phone Rings episode 6 recap: Sa-eon finds out that Hee-joo is the one behind the calls
In episode 6 of When the Phone Rings, Sa-eon wakes up from a bad dream and finds Hee-joo sleeping on his arm. He gets awkward and tries to recall what happened but fails to remember. Later, Hee-joo prepares breakfast for him, and he asks what happened last night. While Hee-joo is typing on her phone, Do-jae calls him.
Do-jae informs him of the text, and Sa-eon finds that Hee-joo's voice is 99.99% similar to that of the caller. Later, Do-jae explains that the caller is not the one behind the kidnapping, explosion, or nursing home incident. Sa-eon decides to find out more about the situation and blames himself for not knowing earlier.
During their sign language lessons, Sa-eon asks about the sign for forgiveness. He signifies that it is difficult to sign it as well, and he ends the lesson there. Hee-joo gets another text from In-a asking to meet.
In this episode of When the Phone Rings, Ui-yong, Sa-eon's father, finds that In-a is in town and suggests that Sa-eon's mother, Kyu-jin, meet her. She seems to be under the influence because of the day that it is. In a flashback, she is shown locking a child in a room and crying outside it.
Hee-joo goes to meet In-a. In-a can now speak and hear. She explains that she underwent surgery for it to happen. In-a then asks Hee-joo to talk. In-a reveals that she had known about Hee-joo all this while. Hee-joo storms out but is stopped by In-a, who asks for forgiveness. Hee-joo signs that she will not let her interfere in her life anymore, though In-a does not understand.
In-a then texts Hee-joo, telling her about how she ended up marrying Sa-eon and how Sa-eon was the one who decided to marry Hee-joo instead of In-a so that he could have a connection with her family.
Hee-joo comes home to find Sa-eon going through her stuff in episode 6 of When the Phone Rings. He tells her that he has been looking for his phone. Seeing lacy lingerie in one of her bags, he pulls it out, and Hee-joo chases him to get it back. While doing so, they both fall on the bed on top of each other. Recalling the kiss, Sa-eon pushes Hee-joo away and goes for a walk.
Suddenly, he receives a call from Hee-joo posing as the kidnapper, 406. Sa-eon tells her that he wants to know more about her. Hee-joo asks him whether the deal he made with In-a was about Hee-joo, and Sa-eon agrees. Sa-eon asks whether Hee-joo is being threatened, to which she replies that she is being threatened but also not.
In When the Phone Rings episode 6, Hee-joo asks if Sa-eon took Hee-joo as a hostage and let In-a go. Sa-eon agrees. He explains that he used to have nightmares as a child, and what calmed him down was seeing Hee-joo practice her gestures. Since Hee-joo had no one to rely on, he tried to help her leave Chairman Hong's house into a new prison. At least, that is how he thinks Hee-joo feels about wanting a divorce.
Hee-joo tells him that she hoped for things to get better for the three years that she was married to him. She hoped she would not be disappointed again if Sa-eon left her. Sa-eon asks if she wants sincerity and affection and that he will provide whatever Hee-joo needs.
Hee-joo starts talking in the first person and asks him why he would do that for her suddenly. Sa-eon tells her that he thought he would have to let Hee-joo go eventually and, hence, did not make an effort. He asks her to promise not to make the call again if they can work things out.
The next day, Hee-joo and the staff from Sa-eon's team go for the retreat. They find a food truck providing lunchboxes. As they wonder who ordered the truck with heart signs on the food, Sa-eon shows up and seems relieved that the truck has arrived.
On the other hand, Sang-woo and Yu-ri visit an orphanage for their upcoming project, and the kids mistake Yu-ri for Sang-woo's girlfriend. While looking through old pictures, they find the picture of the kid they were looking for, who seemed to have a twin and had gone missing.
At the retreat, Sa-eon's staff decide to play competitive games, and Sa-eon chooses to pair up with Hee-joo. He decides that the winning team can decide what they want. The first game is skipping ropes. Sa-eon loses even before Hee-joo gets to join him. In the next round, Hee-joo takes the lead and asks Sa-eon to follow. Hee-joo clasps rhythmically to help him, and he joins her successfully this time.
Next, in the three-legged race, Sa-eon and Hee-joo win. Overjoyed, he picks Hee-joo up, much to everyone's surprise. As a prize, Sa-eon asks to get a picture taken with Hee-joo. Following Mr. Kang's instructions, they make a hand heart together and pose.
The next activity is trekking. Sa-eon and Hee-joo pick up the pace and leave everyone behind. Everyone reaches the peak. While posing for pictures, people flood Sa-eon, and a person falls off the cliff. Since Hee-joo is missing, they assume it is her and deploy a search team. The night falls, but they are still not able to find Hee-joo.
Next, in When the Phone Rings, Hee-joo wakes up in the dark with bruises all over. She remembers someone pushing her from the cliff. She pulled out her phone, but it was broken. She pulls out the phone she took from the kidnapper in episode 6 of When the Phone Rings.
Sa-eon is accompanying the search team. He keeps getting calls from reporters but ignores them. Hee-joo decides to call Sa-eon from the phone, thinking she is at risk of getting caught. He picks up the call and asks where Hee-joo is. He tells her that Hee-joo has a first-aid kit in her bag. Hee-ju pulls out the first aid and uses the portable flare to let them know of her location. Sa-eon rushes to her.
At the end of episode 6 of When the Phone Rings, it is shown that Sa-eon had confessed his feelings to Hee-joo while he was drunk.
The next episode of When the Phone Rings is scheduled to be released on December 20.
