When the Phone Rings released their finale episode on January 4, and fans were disappointed by the seemingly absurd twist. The drama premiered on November 22, 2024, delivering an engaging blend of romance and suspense.

Starring Yoo Yeon-seok, Chae Soo-bin, Heo Nam-joon, and Jang Gyu-ri, When the Phone Rings delves into the challenges faced by a couple in their third year of a politically driven marriage, which takes a shocking turn following a mysterious phone call.

The last few episodes leading to the finale unveiled several dark secrets, adding layers of complexity to the storyline. In episode 12, after Sa-eon's disappearance, Hee-joo sets out to find him and ends up in a war zone. As she is rescued by Sa-eon, they finally get to be together and get remarried.

Though fans get their happy ending, they do not seem too happy with how the finale episode of When the Phone Rings proceeded. One fan said:

"Thank God they won Best Couple before this disaster episode has aired" said one fan.
"What is this nonsense I want to laugh" another fan reacted.
"Kdrama writers and directors never fail to ruined a perfectly crafted drama during the last few parts I AM SO STRESS OUT NOW" responded another.

Fans found the last episode full of unnecessary information and happenings.

"Whose responsible for this mess? Who should i blame? Its a curse to love a show and couple this much and expect great endings," asked another fan.
"bro the last ep is damn rushing," said another fan.
"When you remove all unnecessary things from ep 12 and all youve left is 15 mins worth of content," another fan commented.

What happened in When the Phone Rings finale episode?

The final episode of When the Phone Rings begins with Sa-eon being shot, but it’s revealed to be Hee-joo’s dream. In reality, Sa-eon vanishes after donating his assets and resigning from the presidential office. Meanwhile, Kyu-jin is arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment, while the real Sa-eon is killed by the police.

Ui-yong also resigns, choosing a quiet life. Six months later, Hee-joo searches for clues about Sa-eon’s whereabouts. Visiting Do-jae in prison, she learns that Sa-eon planned to disappear after seeking revenge on the Baek family but changed his mind after meeting her. Further hints from Mr. Park and a mysterious call lead Hee-joo to Argan, a war zone Sa-eon frequented as a journalist.

Despite warnings, she travels there and is kidnapped by rebels. During her captivity, Sa-eon rescues her, disguised as a rebel himself, revealing his reasons for leaving: guilt over her brother’s death, orchestrated by Chairman Baek.

In the epilogue, Sa-eon, now renamed Baek Yu-yeon, starts a new life with Hee-joo, leaving politics behind. Friends gather at their home to celebrate their remarriage, while Sang-woo and Yu-ri announce their engagement.

Hee-joo returns to her work as a news interpreter, and Yu-yeon begins a role as a government negotiator. The series concludes with Yu-yeon and Hee-joo walking hand in hand through sunlit woods, symbolizing their fresh start.
