MBC’s new drama When The Phone Rings is confirmed to make a November broadcast, as reported by Naver on 24 September. Starring Yoo Yeon-seok, Chae Soo-bin, Heo Nam-joon, and Jang Gyu-ri, this romance thriller centers on a couple in their third year of a politically arranged marriage, a relationship that began with a threatening phone call.

The series is led by director Park Sang-woo, who is known for his visually stunning work in The Forbidden Marriage. He teams up with co-director Wi Deuk-gyu and writer Kim Ji-woon, whose previous credits include Melancholia and Doctor John, both recognized for their intricate storylines and strong character development.

The story is adapted from a popular Kakao Page novel of the same name. Produced by Bon Factory and Baram Pictures, When The Phone Rings is shaping up to be one of MBC’s most anticipated dramas of 2024.


Who plays who in When The Phone Rings?

In When The Phone Rings, Yoo Yeon-seok stars as Baek Sa-eon, a character with an enviable background, from his prestigious family to his career success. Baek Sa-eon is a former war correspondent and hostage negotiator who now holds a high-profile position as the youngest presidential spokesperson.

Despite his polished public image, Baek Sa-eon maintains a cold, distant relationship with his wife, Hong Hee-joo, and their political marriage exists solely for appearances.

Chae Soo-bin plays Hong Hee-joo, a mute sign language interpreter and Baek Sa-eon's wife. A kidnapping incident forces them to reconsider their strained marriage, bringing Hong Hee-joo into the spotlight. Heo Nam-joon portrays Ji Sang-woo, a psychiatrist and mystery YouTuber with 200,000 subscribers, whose passion for solving unsolved cases pulls him into a dangerous situation.

Rounding out the cast of When The Phone Rings is Jang Gyu-ri as Na Yu-ri, a bright and talented announcer at the same broadcasting station where Baek Sa-eon works. Na Yu-ri admires Baek Sa-eon, unaware that his wife, Hong Hee-joo, is the sign language interpreter she works alongside during news broadcasts.

Yoo Yeon-seok began his acting career with a small role in Oldboy and resumed acting in 2008. His standout works include films like Re-encounter, A Werewolf Boy, Perfect Proposal, and Mood of the Day. On television, he’s known for his roles in series like Reply 1994, Dr. Romantic, Mr. Sunshine, and Hospital Playlist.

Chae Soo-bin gained recognition in Love in the Moonlight and has since taken on leading roles in dramas like The Rebel, Strongest Deliveryman, I'm Not a Robot, and Rookie Cops. She’s currently filming Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint.

Heo Nam-joon, managed by Initial Entertainment, made his debut in The First Shot and appeared in Missing: The Other Side*, Sweet Home 3, and Your Honor this year.Jang Gyu-ri gained fame in It’s Okay to Not Be Okay and has appeared in The Player 2, Pyramid Game, and Flex X Cop.


When The Phone Rings is set to premiere in November.
