Who is Yoon Soo-il? BLACKPINK Rosé and Bruno Mars' 'APT.' help chart an old song on MelON after 37 years of its original release

BLACKPINK's Rosé and Bruno Mars' latest track, APT., helped chart Yoon Soo-il's 1987 hit song, Apartment, on MelOn. The South Korean veteran musician released Apartment in 1987. It is still hailed as the "nation's song" in South Korea. The song is often sung at soccer or baseball games by spectators.

Meanwhile, due to BLACKPINK's Rosé's APT. track, which is a shorter version of Apartment, Yoon Soo-il's 1987 hit entered the MelON Top 1000 chart for the first time in 42 years. APT. refreshed memories of the original track, which is why the latter is now ranked at No. 951.

Simultaneously, APT. topped the MelOn chart Top 100 on October 27, 2024. The song remained at No. 1 for the second day as of October 28.

Sports Chosun reported a voice clip from MBC Standard FM segment, Son Tae-jin's Trot Radio, where they interviewed Yoon Soo-il via a phone call.

The veteran artist praises Rosé for working globally on the "same theme of apartments." He added that the present is different than it was in the 1980s:

"Rosé and Bruno Mars' ideas are brilliant. I think it's great that they're working globally with the same theme of apartments. The atmosphere is very different now than it was 40 years ago, and the social atmosphere has changed, but music trends have also changed a lot."

"Rosé's songs are cheerful, have good hooks, and are addictive, but back then, I never lost the top spot in karaoke for 10 years," he continued.

The official account of Global Music Chart reported that Yoon Soo-il's Apartment has entered Spotify South Korea's Daily Viral Songs chart at No. 14.

Sports Chosun reported that Yoon Soo-il's Apartment Spotify streams and MelOn streams skyrocketed starting October 18, 2024. It was the same day Rosé and Bruno Mars released their song, APT.

Apartment gained more daily listeners on October 22, 2024, which was over 122% compared to his song streams on October 17, 2024.

Following Rosé's latest single release, the 1987 smash song gained over 190% streaming activity on Genie Music (a Korean music streaming platform).
