FIFTY FIFTY is confirmed to resume their group activities as a five-member band but will not perform at the SBS music show Inkigayo. On September 28, Mulhwa Ilbo, a South Korean media agency, published an exclusive report regarding the girl group's upcoming promotional activities.
FIFTY FIFTY dropped their album Love Tune on September 20 and are all set to perform at live music shows but they will not appear on SBS Inkigayo which is scheduled to be aired on September 29, 2024. For the unversed, K-pop groups tour South Korean music shows which gives them visibility all across the nation and provides them an opportunity to appear on other broadcast shows.
This is because the group's agency ATTRAKT is protesting against the broadcast company SBS. In 2023, an SBS show titled ‘I Want to Know That’ allegedly showcased their support to three former FIFTY FIFTY members Saena, Aran, and Sio through a biased broadcast, during their legal battle against ATTRAKT.
According to ATTRAKT, SBS or the production team of the show has not yet made an official apology regarding the controversial broadcast despite deleting it. Moreover, the show, I Want To Know That, reportedly received strict disciplinary warnings from the Korea Communications Standards Commission for the same. Besides Inkigyayo, the girl group's agency ATTRAKT is set to reportedly boycott all appearances on SBS shows including The Show!
“I don't mind if I can't promote it”- FIFTY FIFTY’s agency ATTRAKT's CEO Jeon Hong-joon on their absence from SBS Inkigayo
In 2023, after the fallout with ATTRAKT, former FIFTY FIFTY members Saena, Aran, and Sio parted ways with the agency. The fourth and the then last member Keena was still signed under the agency. In August 2024, ATTRAKT introduced four new members Chanelle Moon, Yewon, Hana, and Athena who joined Keena to continue group activities as a five-member group.
The CEO of the agency Jeon Hong-joon shared his views on why the group with new members will not be promoted on SBS shows, citing no apology ‘I Want To Know That’ production team as the reason.
He said,
“Even if entertainment and culture are different, 'I Want to Know That' made a huge mistake with Attract and the human Jeon Hong-jun. People around me say, 'Entertainment and culture are different, so why don't you just go with it as a promotional effort? ' I don't mind if I can't promote it. Sometimes, fame and pride are more important than money.”
He further stated that he did not receive a formal apology from the team itself and since he has been a part of the industry for 30 years now, many producers unofficially offered him a spot for the group on shows.
He added,
“'Stop apologizing unofficially and apologize officially. That's how my pride will be restored. What are you talking about after beating up me when I was just sitting there? I can't accept it."
He added,
"It's so unfair that they haven't made any official apology until now after hitting up a passerby. Just because they're a powerful group and a broadcasting station, doesn't mean they can do whatever they want?"
Meanwhile, FIFTY FIFTY appeared on Mnet's M Countdown on September 26 and on KBS 2TV’s Music Bank on September 27. On September 28, they performed at MBC's Show! Music Core. Their album Love Tune is available on major music service platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, and more for streaming.
