Squid Game 2 director Hwang Dong-hyuk has opened up about the AV poster controversy that occurred on Park Sung-hoon’s Instagram page. While the South Korean Netflix series is garnering global attention for its sophomore season released on December 26, 2024, actor Park Sung-hoon got embroiled in controversy following the show.

Park Sung-hoon reportedly uploaded an NSFW parody poster of Squid Game 2 on his Instagram story on December 30, 2024. The image was quickly taken down, but many of his followers had already seen it. This ignited backlash towards The Glory actor on social media.

BH Entertainment, his management, also gave a statement confirming that it was shared by mistake and that it would not happen again. Squid Game 2 director Hwang Dong-hyuk, in a recent interview with Xports News, shared his opinion on the explicit parody of the show.

“As far as I know, something like that came out overseas in Season 1. In the past, that happened whenever a famous work came out, right? It's unpleasant. It's a story that completely destroys the meaning of the work itself.”

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk then revealed that he had not spoken to the actor personally about this incident.

“I haven't talked to Sung Hoon about that issue. I think someone sent it to him, but I haven't heard how he ended up uploading it. Actually, I want to know too. Why did he make such a mistake?”

Park Sung-hoon's agency issues statement after explicit poster controversy & The Tyrant's Chef's table reading postponed

On December 30, Park Sung-hoon uploaded an adult film parody poster of Squid Game 2, receiving criticism from fans and netizens online. The same day, his agency, BH Entertainment, issued an official statement to clarify the situation, explaining that the Queen of Tears actor shared the poster mistakenly while checking his Instagram DMs.

They said,

“It seems that Park Sung-hoon accidentally pressed the wrong button while checking the many DMs he received, and it ended up on his story.”

The agency further stated that the actor himself was in shock and had been reflecting on his mistake.

“The actor himself was very surprised and is reflecting on it. We will work hard to make sure something like this never happens again.”

Besides this, Park Sung-hoon is set to appear as the lead character in the upcoming tvN drama titled The Tyrant's Chef alongside Girls’ Generation's YoonA. Due to the recent controversy, many fans of the K-pop idol have called for his removal from the show.

Moreover, the table reading session of The Tyrant's Chef had been postponed, which was originally scheduled for January 2, 2025. An official from the broadcast channel of the show, tvN, commented on the postponement.

“We adjusted the script reading schedule in consideration of the social atmosphere during the national mourning period.”

However, many netizens speculate that the real reason behind the postponement of the table read session was the AV poster controversy.

Meanwhile, The Tyrant's Chef is the tale of a chef played by YoonA who is at the prime time of her career but time travels to the past and lands in a tyrant's kingdom. There, she meets the King depicted by Park Sung-hoon, known to be the worst tyrant who is also a gourmet. The tvN drama will reportedly air in the second half of 2025.
