Squid Game 2, starring Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-joon, and many more, is facing a boycott from locals in Vietnam due to a controversial dialogue. On December 26, 2024, Squid Game 2 was aired on Netflix, three years after the release of its highly popular pilot season.

The K-drama is known for its thought-provoking storyline and became the most-watched non-English show on Netflix in 2021. The highly anticipated sophomore season of the show also received favorable views on the platform, ranking No. 1 in 93 countries for five consecutive days, including the United States, Japan, France, and more.

On the other hand, the show is under scrutiny in Vietnam as locals call for its boycott due to a controversial dialogue. According to iMBC, local media reported that Vietnamese viewers have started a boycott movement against the show due to a dialogue shared between the lead character Seong Gi-hun's (Lee Jung-jae) friend Park Jeong-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) and his subordinate Kang Dae-ho (Kang Ha-neul).

In this conversation, Kang Dae-ho said,

“My father sent me to (the Marines) to toughen me up. He was a Vietnam War veteran.”

To which Park Jeong-bae replied,

"Your father must be an honorable man.”

The scene went viral among Vietnamese netizens on social media, who criticized the makers for involving sensitive historical issues in the drama. They further stated that honoring South Korean soldiers who participated in the Vietnam War was inappropriate.

Due to the large number of netizens boycotting the show, the Vietnam Film Bureau has confirmed it will review the show. The results of the review are yet to be disclosed.

Squid Game 2 boycott movement reportedly escalates in Vietnam due to controversial dialogue

Squid Game 2 got embroiled in a controversial situation owing to a dialogue shared between the characters Dae-ho and Jeong-bae regarding the sensitive topic of the Vietnam War. Vietnamese locals have initiated a boycott movement on the show and highly criticized the writers for the same.

According to Korea Times, local media reported that the Vietnam Film Bureau in charge of reviewing international films and dramas is currently reviewing whether the film breaks Vietnam’s film laws.

The Bureau released a statement regarding the ongoing review, stating that they would resort to legal procedures if Squid Game 2 violates the film law.

They said,

“If it is concluded that the series violates regulations, we will handle the matter in accordance with the law."

According to the reports, some netizens are also calling for the ban of Netflix from the country in light of the recent issue. As per the results of the Film Bureau’s review, the series may be pulled out of Netflix Vietnam.

Previously, another Netflix series, Little Women, starring Wi Ha-joon, Kim Go-eun, Nam Ji-hyun, Park Ji-hu, and more, also faced backlash in Vietnam. The 2022 K-drama series was removed from Netflix Vietnam for violating the country's laws and was also accused of spreading wrong historical information through the show.

This was due to the show depicting South Korean soldiers as the heroes in the Vietnam War through dialogue. The Little Women dialogue portrayed the South Korean soldiers as competent enough to take down Viet Cong soldiers.

Meanwhile, Squid Game 2 is available on Netflix for streaming, while the third season is in the making with the release date yet to be announced.
