The K-pop girl group BEWAVE sat down for a captivating conversation with Sportskeeda about their debut, future goals, pre-debut experiences, and more. BEWAVE marked their official debut on April 17, 2024, with the mini album BE;WAVE featuring four tracks: SING !, Shine, Blue Wave, and SING! (Inst.) under GoldDust Entertainment. While the album is performed by BEWAVE, the musical genius behind it is the renowned producer El CAPITXN and the Vendors team.

The six-piece K-pop girl band BEWAVE has members who are all in their 20s and have showcased their charms through their musical abilities. The members hail from Japan and South Korea.
In this interview with Inaas Fatima Khan of Sportskeeda, the group discussed their difficulties before officially debuting as BEWAVE members. They also talked about artists like TWICE, AKMU, and SNSD leader Taeyeon among others whom they admire and look up to.
BEWAVE brings in a wave as a fifth-generation girl group through their music they have also opened up about the different types of concepts they would like to try in the future.
Q.) Hi, BEWAVE. Would you kindly introduce the team to us?
- Hello, we're BEWAVE! Our BEWAVE stands for BLUE WAVE. It means that six members with different charms, sometimes calm and sometimes rough waves, will come together to create a new and overwhelming BLUE WAVE.
Q.) Congratulations on your debut! How would you describe your album BE;WAVE?
- Our debut album, BE;WAVE, is a mini album with songs that show various sides of us like the name of BEWAVE. It also consists of music that shares the feelings of all youth and can empathize and enjoy together. Please listen to it and love it! Thank you!
Q.) Who has been your role model and inspiration throughout your pre-debut journey?
ZENA: The team's role model is AKMU, and my role model is Doja Cat. I want to deliver a song that I can relate to and I want to resemble tremendous expressiveness, diversity, and etiquette.
YUNSEUL: I want to play music that the public can sympathize with in various ways like AKMU. We will work hard to clearly show our colors in the future.
LENA: My role model is TWICE. Since I was in Japan, I've seen TWICE's performances a lot. I hope we have a happy opportunity to collaborate with TWICE.
JIUN: My role model is Justin Bieber, because there is a wide range of genres and he can pull off various genres with his own tone. Watching Justin Bieber, I tried hard to find my own tone.
GOWOON: Taeyeon is my role model! While preparing for our debut, I listened to Taeyeon's songs a lot, and I was very happy whenever I listened to them. I want to be a versatile artist like Taeyeon.
AIN: My role model is IU. When I practiced singing, I looked for her a lot! I want to learn that her voice is soft and strong.
Q.) What were some of the difficulties you faced during your long training period, and what kept you motivated?
ZENA: The time we spent together and relied on each other a lot was motivating. However, it was difficult to digest various training sessions and find my own charm.
YUNSEUL: There were a lot of hard times during the long training period, but I worked hard with the mindset that if I started, I should do it until the end. I had my will, but I was able to work harder because I had my family and precious and pretty members who always supported me.
LENA: It was hard to study Korean. I cried a lot while studying Korean, but the members helped me a lot.
JIUN: It was hard to keep practicing without knowing when I was going to debut. But whenever I heard good news, I was able to keep going.
GOWOON: It was the hardest for me to spend the same day by day. I went to school, dorm, and practice room. But I trained hard while watching other singers' performances and thinking about when I achieved my dream. My parents and friends who always supported me were the biggest motivators, and I decided to do well.
AIN: I think it was the hardest time when I doubted whether I could really achieve my dream while practicing. When I saw their performances on big stages, I thought I couldn't give up.
Q.) ZENA and Yunseul, could you share your experiences from participating in survival shows like My Teenage Girl and MIXNINE? What can fans expect from your new chapter as BEWAVE members?
ZENA: It was nice to participate in My Teenage Girl, get a lot of experience, and make a lot of good friends. It was also a time to know a lot about me, and it was a time to know what I look like in public. I want to say thank you to My Teenage Girl program. I'll be approaching you with great music and performance as ZENA of BEWAVE. Thank you.
YUNSEUL: It was difficult to participate, but I decided to enjoy it without regret because it was my choice. I think I felt and learned a lot through the program. I want to say thank you to the MIXNINE program. In the future, we will show you various sides as YUNSEUL of BEWAVE, so please look forward to it, interest, and love!
Q.) LENA, what inspired you to pursue K-pop as someone from Japan? How different are Japan and South Korea for you?
LENA: I watched Girls' Generation’s stage on TV in Japan, and I thought it was cool! After that, I became interested in K-pop. While watching the stage, I danced sang, and practiced a lot. It was a big influence, so I was interested in Korean idols and wanted to become an idol in Korea.
Q.) How was your experience working with EL CAPITXN and the Vendors team? Is there a specific music genre you would like to explore in the future?
ZENA: It was so nice to work with them and I thought I should do well. Personally, I want to try hip-hop and R&B. Also, I want to try solo songs for each member.
YUNSEUL: Thank you (EL CAPITXN and the Vendors team) so much for directing with all your heart in a good atmosphere and environment. ‘SING !’ is a refreshing and cheerful song, so I want to try a different song next time.
LENA: Since I am the only foreign member, I want to make a song with only Japanese lyrics, and I also want to write lyrics in Japanese for that song.
JIUN: Both of you made the recording atmosphere so relaxed, and thanks to the precise direction, the song came out well. The genre I want to try in the future is a song that only has rap with ZENA.
GOWOON: It was an honor and a pleasure to work with EL CAPITXN and Vendors. I was so touched and thankful that they told me everything in detail and in a kind way. The atmosphere was really good, and I had a lot. It was fun working on it, so it was memorable! I really want to continue working with you! The next concept I want to try is pure and sentimental.
AIN: It was a great time to find my color while getting the recording directions. If I have a chance, I would like to try a pop genre song.
Q.) Your first magazine shoot was with MAPS before your debut. Are there any other activities or concepts you'd like to explore for your fans in the future?
ZENA: It was such an honor and a precious opportunity to shoot MAPS Magazine before our debut. We are planning to show you various concepts and activities in the future, so I would like to shoot various magazines.
YUNSEUL: Our team's average height is 170cm, so a lot of people call us model idols. I want to show you a lot of great things through various magazine shoots in the future.
LENA: I'd like to thank MAPS once again for giving me the opportunity to shoot MAPS magazine before our debut. In the future, I want to show you how it is published in various magazines and shoot advertisements. And personally, I also have a goal to shoot magazines and commercials in Japan!

AIN: There are so many things I want to show you in the future. I want to try the concept of everyone wearing suits. I think it would be really cool!
Q.) As members of BEWAVE in your 20s, YUNSEUL, JIUN, LENA, ZENA AIN, and GOWOON, what are some things you wish to do now that you couldn't do before?
ZENA: I want to create a place where I can meet and communicate with my fans a lot.
YUNSEUL: I want to work harder and win the Rookie Award. And I want to perform on the year-end stage!
LENA: I want to get a driver's license. I haven't got a license yet, so if I have time, I want to get a license and go to the sea or somewhere I want to go!
JIUN: I want to meet and communicate with our fans more often.
GOWOON: I want to drive! And I also want to go on a trip with the members! If I go on a trip by driving, I will feel like you are a real adult.
AIN: I love being able to drive as an adult. I've always wanted to drive since I was little.
