Yook Sung-jae, Kim Ji-yeon, and Kim Ji-hoon have been cast for lead roles in SBS's upcoming 2025 drama Gwigoong, as reported by OSEN on July 19. This live-action fantasy romantic comedy will be directed by Yoon Seong-sik, who will collaborate with writer Yoon Soo-jeong on the project.
Yoon Seing-shik is known for works like Mr. Queen, The King’s Face, and Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth, while Yoon Soo-jeong has worked on the dramas You're the Best, Yi Sun-sin, Gaksital, and Dae Jo-yeong.
Gwigoong is a fantasy historical romantic comedy that centers on Imoogi, a female shaman who challenges the king, and an eight-foot-tall ghost who holds grudges against him. According to Korean tradition, an Imoogi is a legendary monster that spends a thousand years submerged in water and has the ability to transform into a dragon by acquiring the Yeouiju, a magical gem.
Gwigoong: Cast and character
Yook Sung-jae portrays Yoon Gap, a swordsman who attempts to defend the palace from Palcheokgwi's pranks. He is the first love of Kim Ji-yeon's character, shaman Yeo-ri. Yoon Gap suffers the tragic destiny of having Imoogi, an evil ghost, take Yeo-ri's body to use it to climb to heaven.
Kim Ji-yeon plays the role of shaman Yeo-ri, the sole descendant of a well-known mansin and an Ae-che (glasses) artisan with exceptional supernatural abilities. Her life takes a terrible turn when she becomes entwined with an Imoogi that was not intended to be her dragon, leading her into a series of unanticipated occurrences.
Meanwhile, Kim Ji-hoon portrays the character of Lee Seong, a reformist monarch with aspirations of building a powerful Joseon. He challenges Palcheok-gwi, who is resentful of the royal family.
Following unpleasant episodes in the palace, King Lee Seong—who, according to national law, forbade shamans from entering the palace—joins forces with Yoon Gap, his favorite subject, and the shaman Yeo-ri, whom he brought with him to solve the mystery of the Palcheokgwi.
Kim Young-kwang to make a cameo in Gwigoong
Kim Young-kwang has been assigned a cameo role in Gwigoong, according to a report published on July 19 by OSEN. Even though not much about his role has been disclosed thus far, it is anticipated that the actor would add complexity and interest to the story of the upcoming drama starring Sung-jae and Ji-yeon.
Kim Young-kwang, who began his acting career in 2008, gained recognition for his exceptional acting abilities. Some of his well-known works include Call It Love, On Your Wedding Day, Pinocchio, and Somebody. According to reports, fans can expect to see him soon as the lead in the forthcoming drama Eun Soo's Good Day, which also stars Lee Young Ae.
