Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed what viewers could expect from the forthcoming seasons
Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed at a For Your Consideration awards event for the new season what viewers could expect from the forthcoming seasons. The event was held in Los Angeles. He began by confessing that he did not have any plans for a second season. The director stated that he felt pressure about the upcoming episodes as audiences have been anticipating the seasons.
“Of course I felt a certain amount of pressure because I knew that there was a huge amount of anticipation out there, and honestly when I was creating season one I didn’t plan in any detail that there would be a second season. However, I did have something in mind that if there were to ever be a second season, I had this idea of what story I would tell.”
He mentioned seasons 2 and 3 would follow the story of the main protagonist, Gi-hun, returning to the game, which took the lives of many desperate people. He noted that he would showcase the male lead returning to the games to put an end to it. Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that seasons two and three would present the journey of Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae. The viewers would follow it both physically and emotionally.
Hwang Dong-hyuk further explained the basic differences between the protagonists in seasons two and three. He mentioned, as translated by The Hollywood Reporter:
"Gi-hun has experienced too many things, witnessed too many deaths for him to return to the way it was before, no matter how hard he tries. The way you see Gi-hun in season one and the state that you see him in season two are very different."
He also told the Hollywood Reporter that the editing portion of season three has been concluded. He also revealed the reason behind the speedy completion of Squid Game and mentioned, as translated by the outlet:
"When I was thinking about the idea for the ending of season three, I think it sort of naturally came to me that this was the finale. I believed that with that story, I was able to tell everything that I wanted to tell through the story of Squid Game and also in the perspective of Gi-hun as a character, and I thought that we don't need any further stories from here."
Squid Game season 3 is slated to premiere in 2025.
