No Gain No Love review: Shin Min-ah continues to shine as the rom-com queen while Kim Young-dae steals the show with his charm
Prime Video drama No Gain No Love is a melodramatic, romantic comedy series that showcases the complexity behind Son Hae-young’s calculative personality as she did not receive the undivided love and attention as the only child of her parents. Son Hae-young’s character is well written as she neither inflicts monetary or emotional damage on others nor does she suffer any losses.
Shin Min-ah, who is known for her romance dramas like Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, Oh My Venus, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, and more has once again struck with her remarkable performance and continued to dictate the rom-com scene. Her acting leaves a lasting impression on viewers as she perfectly illustrates all the traits of Son Hae-young’s headstrong personality in No Gain No Love.
On the other hand, Kim Young-dae known for his dramas like The Penthouse: War in Life, Shooting Stars, The Forbidden Marriage, and more, is a charmer. With his character Kim Ji-uk, he stole the spotlight with his soft nature. Kim Young-dae’s on-screen chemistry with Shin Min-ah will have the viewers swooning.
The relationship dynamics in the show pull the viewers in for a wholesome ride, especially with the girls' trio: Son Hae-young, Cha Hui-seong, and Nam Ja-yeon. The troubled trio share a complicated connection, however, they seamlessly become the visual representation of supportive female friendships. Moreover, they are also realistic when advising in tough moments.
Besides the main storyline, the subplot featuring Lee Sang-yi as Bok Gyu-hyun, Han Ji-hyun as Nam Ja-yeon, and Lee You-jin as Yeo Ha-jun is also captivating. Shin Min-ah and Lee Sang-yi's reunion in No Gain No Love after Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha will delight the viewers.
Notably, the unapologetic hilarious anecdotes of No Gain No Love will have the viewers wondering how the writer thought of them. Despite the positives and its fresh take on the fake marriage trope, the drama pulled up a predictable cliché sub-plot in the climax. However, viewers would want to continue the show as it has a lot more to offer with its comical twists.
The show also left a space as it missed the chance to explore Lee Sang-yi and Kim Young-dae’s bromance in the second half of the show. Although there were a few moments here and there, their synergy had potential that was left unexplored.
Final verdict: If you are looking for a light-hearted swoon-worthy romance drama with a fresh hilarious plot then you must add No Gain No Love to your watch list. It's great for a quick weekend binge as 12 episodes are available on Prime Video. Viewers may look forward to the release of the No Gain No Love spin-off drama Spice Up Our Love starring Lee Sang-yi and Han Ji-hyun on October 3, 2024, on Prime Video.
