No Way Out: The Roulette had a promising start but failed miserably with its lackluster and messy plot
No Way Out: The Roulette is a dark political drama that meets the Squid Game theme, where a roulette game decides the next criminal's fate. The criminal gets hunted by the public, who are promised $15 million by a masked vigilante to kill the criminal. This vigilante uses the game of roulette and targets the rapist and murderer Kim Guk-ho (Yoo Jae-myung) in episodes 1 and 2.
The drama stars Baek Joong-sik (Cho Jin-woong), Yoon Chang-jae (Lee Kwang-soo), and Sung Joon-woo (Kim Sung-cheol) on their paths to get hold of the money. However, the story severely lacked any strength and purpose.
Amidst people who lack a moral compass and those for whom the lines between right and wrong seem to blur because of money, No Way Out: The Roulette failed to deliver the feeling of "justice" as each criminal gets hunted, not for justice but for money.
Politician Ahn Myeong-ja enters the chaos in her city and plans to use it to win votes and her control of Hosan City. She meets Kim Guk-ho and offers him 1 billion won to stay away from the city for five years. However, Guk-ho plays hard to get and demands 10 billion won instead. Less to her knowledge, Lee Sang-bong had recorded her offering Guk-ho money.
Meanwhile, with the $15 million bounty on the head (20 billion won approx.), Kim Guk-ho—lacking any remorse or guilt for his past deed where he raped and brutally murdered a minor high school girl—snatches the opportunity to make more money.
Guk-ho and Lee Sang-bong (Kim Mu-yeol) blackmail Myeong-ja with the recording and ask for the money. Amidst all this, Detective Joong-sik gets blackmailed by Chang-jae for stealing the bag of money from the dead guy's apartment in episode 2. Many subplots within the subplots made the entire show messy, which could be irksome for viewers to keep track of.
No Way Out: The Roulette does a poor job of staying on track and delivering a bite-sized thriller. Merging politics with a dark death game similar to Squid Game and Alice In Boderland proved to be a recipe for disaster.
However, the actors—Cho Jin-woong from Signal, Golden Bell Award nominee Greg Hsu, Kim Sung-cheol from Our Beloved Summer, and Lee Kwang-soo from Running Man—gave a stellar performance.
Though there isn't much in this Disney+ original series, keep an eye out for Taiwanese actor Hsu Kuang-han, known professionally as Greg Hsu, as Mr. Smile. Besides him, rising star Lee Sung-cheol and veteran actor Cho Jin-woong have given impressive performances.
No Way Out: The Roulette is available on Disney+ for global streaming.
