Episode 2 of Pachinko season 2 leaves viewers with tears watching Isak's last goodbye to his beloved Sunja

The second episode of Pachinko season 2 (chapter ten) begins with a man riding a bicycle through the nearly deserted streets of Osaka in 1945. Mozasu and three of his friends play around pretending to be soldiers. Noa, Mozasu's older brother, walks by and sees them play.

Suddenly, the man on the bicycle stops in front of a house and knocks on the door. A woman answers, and he discreetly gives her a message, and she starts crying. She was the mother of Mozasu's friends, and apparently, his father died at war. The mother is embraced by one of Mozasu's friends, highlighting the devastating and actual consequences of the conflict.

Pachinko season 2 episode 2 shifts to Noa and Mozasu arriving home shortly afterward, only to find a man entering through the front door of their house and collapsing. Noa calls for his aunt, and they realize that it is Isak—Sunja's husband and the father of Noa and Mozasu.

For the unversed, Isak was falsely arrested by the police in Pachinko season 1 when Noa was just a kid. Since then, he has been tortured in the Japanese prison for seven years.

Presently, in Pachinko season 2 episode 2, Sunja and everyone were shocked to see a brutally tortured Isak, as it was clear that he had been abused throughout his seven years in prison. Although Sunja rushes to Isak's side and tells him that he will recover quickly, Isak simply smiles, holding her hand, and tells her that he may not have much time.

Isak is having difficulty breathing and is hardly able to sit up. Sunja asks Kyung-hee to stay by Isak's side while she finds a doctor. Kyung-hee, fearing Isak might not make it through the night, advises Sunja to stay with him. However, Sunja is determined that her husband will survive, and she leaves to find a doctor.

Meanwhile, in Pachinko season 2, Sunja turns to Koh Han-su (Lee Min-ho), the one person who can assist her in finding a doctor, as he is an affluent man in Japan. Sunja arrives at Han-su's house and immediately figures out that he is behind Isak's escape from the prison.

She angrily questions Han-su if it was possible to get Isak out of prison years ago, but Han-su tells her that he barely managed to get Isak out by bribing the police warden for a safe passage out of Japan.

Han-su asks Sunja to leave Osaka along with her sons when the US plans to bomb Osaka. Han-su tells Sunja that if they work out a bargain, he will get her a doctor. Sunja accepts Hansu's bargain just to save Isak's life and returns home with the doctor.

Meanwhile, before Sunja's return, Noa stays by Isak's side at the house and watches a severely ill and injured Isak trembling in fear and having a nightmare. Noa tries to calm his father and places a hand on his shoulder but Isak wakes up abruptly and gets scared. Noa calms him by reminding him that he is his son. Isak tells him to fetch Paster Hu, and Noa runs to bring the Pastor.

Kyung-hee asks Mozasu to deliver a note at the telegram office to her older brother in Tokyo. Mozasu runs to the telegram office and asks the clerk to write a telegram for the given contact. The clerk asks him to check the letter before the final submission, and Mozasu gets sad after reading it.

The letter read, "Isak came home. He is dying." Little Mozasu calms himself immediately and gives the clerk the letter to send immediately to his uncle (Kyung-hee and Isak's brother). Mozasu returns home and sits by his dying father.

Isak and Mozasu sit side by side while they wait for the pastor, and the little child tells his father—whom he met for the first time since his birth—what he would do if he were wealthy. Isak imparts priceless knowledge to his kid, telling him that the true meaning of riches is love.

In the next scene of Pachinko season 2, there is a blackout in the house, and Isak appears scared. Kyung-hee tells Isak that it's normal and happens every day and goes to light a lantern. Mozasu watches his father getting scared of the darkness and tenderly gives his father a toy airplane to calm him down.

Meanwhile, Noa returns with Pastor Hu, and Isak asks everyone to leave them alone apart from Noa. When the three are left alone, Isak confronts the pastor for betraying him. Isak reveals that he knows that Hu was the one who got Isak falsely arrested by the police seven years ago. Hu confesses that he despised Isak as everyone loved him; however, he regretted it after Isak got arrested.

Noa is baffled to learn the shocking truth about the pastor, who ruined his family. Isak tells Pastor Hu that he forgives him, but Noa gets angry and pushes the pastor out of their house. Isak then tells Noa that mercy or forgiveness is neither powerful nor a weakness. It is simply the act of acknowledgment of the culprit's sins.

Isak starts to cough immediately, but Sunja arrives at home with the doctor. After seeing Isak's condition, the doctor asks everyone to leave them immediately and checks Isak. After a while, the doctor comes out of the room and tells Sunja and her family to prepare themselves for the worst. Sunja begs the doctor to save her husband and not worry about the money.

The doctor becomes sad and tells Sunja that the way Isak has been continuously tortured in the prison is terrible. Due to that, his lungs are filled with mucus, and he has developed sepsis. The doctor reveals that Isak only has a few hours to live at most, and she should spend those last moments by her husband's side.

In the next scene of Pachinko season 2, viewers see Sunja lying next to Isak, the two facing each other. Isak tells her in battered breaths that he wants to live and see their sons grow. He also tells her how much he has always loved her and asks her to find a partner after he is gone.

Sunja comforts and assures Isak that her life is already fulfilled by being loved and cherished by Isak. She promises him that their sons will live a good life. Sunja watches as Isak takes his last breaths lying beside her. She walks out of the room and goes outside the house to cry her heart out.

Episode 2 of Pachinko season 2 ends with Sunja and Kyung-hee walking on an empty street in Osaka with a few other people while Noa carries his father's casket along with five other men. Meanwhile, little Mozasu walks in front of the funeral procession with a framed picture of Isak.

Two men are seen pushing the casket inside the fire chimney as a heartbroken Sunja watches. The people start panicking as soon as they hear the US Air Force planes throwing bombs and dragging Sunja and her sons along with Kyung-hee.

Sunja cries and begs to be left alone so that she can stay with her husband during his final rites of passage. As she gets dragged away by others, she looks at Isak's casket being engulfed in flames.

Pachinko season 2 episode 3 (chapter 11) will be aired on Apple TV+ on September 5, 2024.
