Pachinko season 2 aired its third episode on Apple TV+ on September 6, 2024. Sunja (Kim Min-ah) and her family are having a hard time adjusting to all the changes brought about by the war in Japan. In episode 3, Noa (Kim Kang-hoon) and Mozasu (Kwon Eun-seong)—Sunja's children—and her sister-in-law Kyunghee (Jung Eun-chae) are dragged away by the people from Isak's funeral.

They run in total darkness, engulfed with the noise of planes and air sirens, making it obvious that the war has reached the city (Osaka). Sunja and her family are seen fighting to stay together as others hurriedly race through the streets, unable to give Isak (Sunja's husband) a proper funeral. They are rounded up by Hansu (Lee Min-ho), who asks Sunja and Kyunghee to leave right away.

In Pachinko season 2 episode 3, with Hansu's help, Sunja and her family manage to leave Osaka moments before the US Air Force bombs the entire city, killing thousands. Sunja cries in the car, thinking about not being able to give a proper send-off to Isak while her youngest son, Mozasu, looks outside the window as Osaka gets burned down to the ground by the US military.

Pachinko season 2 episode 3 takes Sunja and her family far away from the horrors of the bomb blast

Pachinko season 2 episode 3 shows Sunja telling Kyunghee that Hansu is a family friend and that she can trust him. Hansu's right-hand man, Mr. Kim (Kim Sung-kyu), assists them in frantically packing amid the chaos of the US Air Force flying above them and the people running to survive the bomb blasts. Sunja and her family board Hansu's car and try to navigate the congested streets.

As they leave in the car, Noa and Mozasu look back and watch the US Air Force planes bombing the city of Osaka. The next scene in Pachinko shifts to the family driving far away with Hansu and Mr. Kim to the countryside. They reach a small village after driving throughout the night.

Sunja is terrified of what it would mean to accept Hansu's help, fearing that Noa would learn the truth that Hansu is his real father and not Isak. Hansu assures Sunja that he would never jeopardize his own son and that he would do anything to hide the truth and keep Noa safe.

Pachinko season 2 episode 3 displays "June 1945" in the following scene, indicating that Sunja and her family have gotten accustomed to the village after several months of the Osaka bomb blast. She and Kyunghee are seen tilling the rice paddy fields and quietly endure their coworkers' slander and denigration of them being Koreans.

However, Hansu revisits them in the countryside with new materials for the house and gifts for Noa and Mozasu. Hansu makes an effort to enhance Noa's intelligence and help him have a deeper understanding of the world, giving him several newspapers to "read between the lines." Hansu also offers the boys a kite, which they fly; however, they all panic for a moment as several US planes fly by.

Mr. Kim reassures the terrified family that they are heading north, away from both them and Kyunghee's husband, who was in Nagasaki. Mosazu doesn't appear to mind the shift, although they have fled to the countryside. Little Mozasu shares that a robber is stealing their eggs and requests Sunja for a stakeout. Mr. Kim recommends conducting a stakeout to identify the offender.

Mozasu's carefree, naive acceptance of their fate stands in stark contrast to the adults' grief at the effects of war and how unjust it all is. He enjoys living in the village, where he doesn't have to attend school or study. Later, in Pachinko season 2 episode 3, Mr. Kim, Kyunghee, Noa, and Mosazu, with headbands tied around their foreheads in white, wait to catch the thief in the act.

The boys ask Mr. Kim about his history while they wait for the thief to show up. Mr. Kim tells how he first saw Hansu on the docks 15 years ago and how Hansu saved his life. Mr. Kim added that his family had a farm in Korea, but when the Japanese seized control of the country, their land was stolen from them since his father was unable to pay the tax payment.

Pachinko season 2 episode 3 continues to link the generations in their struggle for survival by switching from the 1945 chronology to that of Sunja's grandson, Solomon (Jin Ha), in the 1980s.

This narrative provides insight into Mr. Kim's personal life and struggles, and Kyunghee is moved by the candor. Meanwhile, a group of young village boys shows up to steal the eggs laid by Sunja's hens. One of them was Noa's classmate from the city, who used to bully Noa a lot because he was Korean.

The boy reveals that they are constantly famished since he and the other children are evacuees. Noa shows compassion, lets the boys go, and also offers him some eggs to take with him.

In the closing minutes of Pachinko season 2 episode 3, Solomon (Sunja's grandson from 1989) witnesses Han Geum-ja (Park Hye-jin) bid farewell to her house. Solomon calls someone and tells him over the phone that Abe-san now owns the land, and the idea is officially coming together. The loss of the property and Solomon's start of Abe-san's downfall make for a poignant moment.

After that, the scene shifts to Kyunghee in 1945, who is restless. When she takes a walk outside, she sees Mr. Kim—who is also up at this late hour. She looks at him longingly but does not move to talk to him. The episode ends leaving viewers wondering if Kyunghee would develop a fondness for the forlorn Mr. Kim, as they both have lost everything they held dear.

Pachinko season 2 episode 4 will be released on September 13, 2024, on Apple TV+.
