The opening scene of Pachinko Season 2 episode 5 is set in Nagasaki, dated August 1, 1945, and is shot entirely in black and white. The family has left for the countryside, but Yoseb (Han Joon-Woo) has been stationed in Nagasaki, where he works in a factory. He labors at the workplace as prejudiced Japanese coworkers make fun of Korean laborers who look like him.
Coincidentally, Yoseb makes friends with Taehoon (Baek Su-ho), a young Korean who was transferred over from Korea a year earlier due to an accident at the mine where he was employed. Pachinko Season 2 episode 5 shows the dates displayed in white, indicating the passing of each day. Yoseb and other workers are informed that a key counselor to the Emperor is scheduled to come on August 7, 1945.
On August 9, 1945, during the visit of the counselor, Yoseb sees Taehoon taking a knife out of his pocket and attacking the counselor. He tries to stop Taehoon and gets stabbed instead of the counselor. However, the guards catch both Yoseb and Taehoon and throw Yoseb inside of a true. Before anyone could blink, a bomb blast in the factory kills everyone—Nagasaki gets bombed by the United States.
By the end of Pachinko Season 2 episode 5, we shift to 1950. A radio announcer announces that Korea has officially become separated due to the hostilities raging between the North and the South. Sunja, Hansu, Kyunghee, and Yoseb overhear the radio announcement with a worried and hopeless look.
Pachinko Season 2 episode 5: A time jump & Sunja's family's hope to return to their homeland disappearing
After the atmoic bombing in Nagasaki, Japan, Pachinko Season 2 episode 5 shifts to Yoseb being treated by Sunja and Kyunghee at Hansu's countryside farm. Yoseb suffers from 3rd degree burns all over his face and body. He wakes up and sees Hansu (Lee Min-ho) sitting on a chair beside him. Hansu tells him that Kyunghee and others will return shortly as they went out to work.
Hansu reminds Yoseb that they are all at his countryside farm and that Yoseb survived the bomb blast as the truck shielded him. He informs that everyone else in Nagasaki and the factory are dead. Yoseb sees Hansu and gets angry after recognizing him as Noa's biological father. He shouts at Hansu and asks him to stay away from his family as Isak (Yoseb's brother) is the real father of Noa.
Hansu calmly picks up a hand mirror and places it in front of Yoseb, who breaks down seeing his burnt face. Hansu says that he doesn't want to interfere with their family but Sunja and Noa are his.
"You being the head of this family, I don't dispute that. But know this. I saved you, just as I saved others. Not out of goodwill but because of Sunja and Noa. They are mine."
In between these scenes, Pachinko Season 2 episode 5 also shows the masked anguish between Kyunghee (Yoseb's wife) and Mr. Kim, who had fallen in love with each other while residing at the farm. Now, with the return of Yoseb, both Kyunghee and Mr. Kim try to coexist in one house without speaking or passing a glance at one another.
After a few months, Sunja's (Kim Min-ah) family is seen packing their belongings to head back to Osaka. As they are about to leave the farm, Noa (Kim Kang-hoon) bids his schoolmate farewell and they drive away with a sad expression on their faces. The camera shows the chalk drawings on the farm walls, previously made by Mozasu (Sunja's youngest son), to show the memories of the family left behind.
Pachinko Season 2 episode 5 displays "1950" in bold white color on the screen, suggesting a time skip. We see a grown up Noa and Mozasu sharing the same bedroom as the former tries to wake up Mozasu. The 20-year-old Noa, who resembles a lot like Isak despite not being his biological son, symbolizes how much Noa took after Isak—who raised him since the day Noa was born.
Sunja is seen making ramen bowls at a small shop she has been operating at the Osaka market—a contrast between when she first arrived in Japan in Pachinko season 1 as a young maiden. Her hair has started to show the signs of aging and distress as she works hard to support Noa's education and also save every scrap to open a small restaurant to support her family better.
A customer arrives at Sunja's shop and orders a bowl of ramen. He also tells her about a vacant restaurant near the train station that Sunja can take for her restaurant. Sunja thanks him but gets worried about the rent of the place.
The customer assures her that he will speak to the owner and put in a good word for her and her family. Meanwhile, Mr. Kim returns from work and is seen entering Sunja's house. Apparently, he has been staying with him for over 5 years.
Kyunghee sees Mr. Kim and tells him to eat something but Mr. Kim stops her and says that he is tired so he will just go to his room and rest. It is visible that even after 5 years, both Kyunghee and Mr. Kim's feelings for one another didn't vanish. However, they both try to avoid each other as much as possible.
In the following scene of Pachinko Season 2 episode 5, Mr. Kim meets Ko Hansu and inquires as to how long he must remain with Kyunghee and her family. Hansu says that he had thought that Mr. Kim's feelings for Kyunghee would disappear overtime, but he must have been wrong. Hansu tells him that he can leave as soon as Noa leaves for university.
Mr. Kim believes Hansu has handled Noa's university admission to his son who passes the test with ease. Feeling slightly insulted, Hansu responds that he will do anything for his son but not alter the university results. Hansu's real motivation, though, is to observe how far Noa can go on his own before offering any assistance.
"I'll do anything for my son, but not that."
Later, in Pachinko Season 2 episode 5, Sunja is seen sitting beside Noa at their house as he studies for his university entrance exam. She expresses regret for the amount of effort Noa is putting in and says she wishes she could have done more to help him. Although he acknowledges that they had the option to take Hansu's money, Noa assures Sunja that he is glad that they chose not to.
Noa says that he didn't want to take anyone's help to see how far he can go, echoing Hansu's sentiments from season 1 where he had once said that he wants to see how much he can achieve on his own. The poignant scene is a beautiful reminder that even though Noa has surprisingly taken after Isak in terms of kindness, maturity, and even looks, he is somewhere still Hansu's son.
Pachinko Season 2 episode 5 shows Noa being nervous about doing well in the university entrance exam in the last few minutes of the episode. Sunja accompanies him to the examination center after seeing Noa nervous and scared. Meanwhile, the Japanese radio announces that Korea has officially divided and the north and the south are at war.
Sunja, Kyunghee, Sunja's mother, Yoseb, and even Hansu are seen listening to the radio broadcast with a worried expression. Sunja and her family's hopes to return to their homeland (Korea) seem to disappear.
In the final scene of Pachinko Season 2 episode 5 see Noa sitting frozen at the examination center, staring at the clock as time passes by. He starts answering the questions after sometime, leaving viewers anxious.
Pachinko Season 2 episode 6 will be aired on September 27, 2024, on Apple TV+.
